Join this mindful community of painters for artistic inspiration, painting demos, a bit of art history, lively discussion and fun. All skill levels welcome. This class is offered in partnership with Washtenaw Community College for individuals 65 and older.
Instructor: Debra Golden
Tuesdays, Sept. 12-Nov. 21, (no class Nov. 7 due to election) 1:30-3:30 p.m., free for students 65 and older
Materials
Bring a basic watercolor set, brushes (specifically watercolor brushes), watercolor paper, and a pencil.
Some optional extras are often shared by the instructor (sponges, mister, water containers)
Here is a more specific list of suggested materials:
Watercolor paints – tubes or a kit is fine; this is a recommended list of individual colors (It is not required to have all these exact colors.):
Cadmium red and/or Windsor red (a warmer red)
Permanent Rose or Alizarin Crimson (a cool red)
Cadmium yellow medium, or gamboge (warm yellow)
Lemon yellow (cool yellow)
Phalo or Prussian blue (deep dark blue)
Ultramarine, Cobalt or Cerulean blue (more of a sky blue)
Sepia (dark brown), or burnt umber
Anything else – such as Hooker’s green, Payne’s’ gray, etc. is optional.
Limiting colors is best as we begin, so you learn those colors well, and how to mix them.
A variety of paintbrushes: flat, bamboo or round, detail or rigger brush, and a fan brush (if you have one)
Brushes: They should be brushes specifically for watercolor to hold the necessary water and paint. They should retain their shape when wet. There are many good synthetic fiber brushes on the market. I like Golden Fleece brushes for their quality and reasonable price.
One or two flat brushes, choose a 1/2", 3/4" or 1" (I love my angled shader)
Round brushes, sizes 6 and larger or smaller as you wish
Wash brush, 1" or larger
Rigger or Script liner, a brush with long, thin bristles for fine lines
Scrubber, an old oil brush would suffice for scrubbing out or lifting color
Toothbrush, for spattering effects
A basic variety set is a good place to start.
A paint palette, and/or a tray for mixing colors –one with “wells” is best for watercolor. You need to have a mixing area, too.
A sponge is good for creating special textures. An old toothbrush is a good splattering tool.
Blue painters tape is handy for blocking off areas you wish to keep white
White artist tape is used to tape down the paper.
Paper towels - or rags
Containers of clean water (change often). Plant mister is optional -
Watercolor paper: 140 # cold press is easiest, sampler packs – if you can find them –watercolor blocks of paper and pads are fine. Good quality paper makes a huge difference! I often get a pad that's about 9" x 12" ---a little bigger or smaller is fine.
You may bring a blow dryer if you wish to hurry drying along

Location: Ann Arbor Senior Center
Address: 1320 Baldwin Ave.City of Ann Arbor Eventshttp://uid.trumba.com/event/171610526City Planning CommissionLarcom City Hall, 301 E Huron St, Second floor, City Council Chambers
Tuesday, April 2, 2024, 7 – 9pm

This meeting will be broadcast live on CTN Cable Channel 16, ATT Channel 99, and online at a2gov.org/watchCTN

To speak at public comment call 206-337-9723 or 213-338-8477 or Toll Free 877-853-5247 or 888-788-0099 Enter Meeting ID: 977 6634 1226
View city council, boards and commissions meeting agendas.City of Ann Arbor Eventshttp://uid.trumba.com/event/171266308CANCELLED - Downtown Area Citizens Advisory Council (CAC)Tuesday, April 2, 2024, 7 – 9pm

CANCELLED--Downtown Area Citizens Advisory Council Meeting
View city council, boards and commissions meeting agendas.City of Ann Arbor Eventshttp://uid.trumba.com/event/172426471Move and Groove with Ballet ChelseaWednesday, April 3, 2024, 9:30 – 10:15am

Pre-Registration Required. Join our friend Eleva Potter, Natural Area Preservation Environmental Educator, for this new, three-part series! Eleva will help us learn how to identify common invasive species, cook with them and turn them into beautiful art! Each session will focus on a different topic:
Session 1: Become familiar with the four most common invasive plants you can find in Ann Arbor City Parks, learn which ones are edible, and try some easy dishes you can make out of them. Come hungry because you will be taste testing these recipes;
Session 2: Learn more about invasive forbs and how to turn them into different colors of paper;
Session 3: Collect woody invasives the creating an Earth Loom by weaving invasives together between trees, that will be open to the public to enjoy.
Preregistration required by calling 734.794.6250. Free of charge.

Location: Ann Arbor Senior Center
Address: 1320 Baldwin Ave.City of Ann Arbor Eventshttp://uid.trumba.com/event/173654789Junior Volunteer ClubVeterans Memorial Park
Friday, May 3, 2024, 4 – 5:30pm

Join GIVE 365 for the Junior Volunteer Club service project at Veterans Memorial Park. This means a lovely morning for volunteers in this 8-acre oak-hickory woodland (with a prairie to boot)! Pulling invasive weeds with NAP will be easy and rewarding and have lasting effects for the local ecosystem.

Meet at the park entrance on Sunset Rd, at the end of Brooks St. Volunteers will pull invasive weeds from the ground by hand. Workday sites have unpaved trails and require going off-trail. Preregister through VolunteerHub so NAP can plan on enough staff and supplies for a safe and successful event.
