"\;How Do We Know
It'\;s Music? On Musical Capacities of the Electromagnetic Field"
\;
What happens when the electromagnetic signal is not only delib
erately made audible\, but also exploited with a specifically musical ai
m? In this presentation\, I investigate the distinctively musical use of
electromagnetism in art from the 1960s until the present day. The two c
ase studies include the works by Christina Kubisch (b. 1948) and Jasna V
elič\;ković\; (b. 1974). While the two artists share a commitm
ent to a modernist quest for new sounds\, they investigate the musical c
apacities of the electromagnetic field in distinctive ways. Kubisch oper
ates primarily as a sound artist\, within the audio-visual realm. Her in
stallations include induction coils whose sounds are picked up by the vi
sitors through specially designed headphones. The “\;musicalityR
21\; of those works arises from the visitors’\; movement within the
exhibition space and appears as a completely individual and internalize
d event. As a composer\, she also “\;finds”\; music in the sou
nding of electromagnetic fields that she explores in various places thro
ughout the world. Velič\;ković\; works from a predominantly au
ditory perspective. Her unambiguously musical creative process assumes b
oth the compositional application of interference and its inclusion in a
purposefully musical performance. The two artists’\; approaches me
et in an embodied reality of an intense and unique musical experience.

Emory University students\, faculty\, and st aff –\; join us for our 9th annual Women of Wikipedia Edit- a-thon!
We invite all Emory University students\, facult y\, and staff to learn how to edit Wikipedia with us in a live workshop and community gathering. Graduate students may receive JPE 610 credit fo r attending this event.
Wikipedia is the largest encyclopedia in t he world\, and anyone can edit it –\; yet less than 10 percent of W ikipedia editors are women. Prominent women in their fields are also muc h less documented on Wikipedia than men. The goal of this event and the global movement is to amplify the voices of cis and transgender women an d non-binary individuals by giving them due coverage on Wikipedia. As th is is an intersectional feminist event\, we aim to address this represen tation across racial\, ethnic\, and cultural backgrounds.
All stud ents\, faculty\, and staff are invited to attend and make a positive dif ference in how we talk and write about women on the Internet. No experie nce is required –\; we’\;ll teach you all you need to know to participate.
Food will be served at this event\, but you must RSVP to be counted for the food order! RSVP here: emorywikiwomen.com.
Hosted by the Emory Libraries Wikipedia Group.

PT-symmetric quantum mechani cs
\;
The average quantum physicist on the street would say that a quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian must be Dirac Hermitian (inva riant under combined matrix transposition and complex conjugation) in or der to guarantee that the energy eigenvalues are real and that time evol ution is unitary. However\, the Hamiltonian $H=p^2+ix^3$\, for example\, which is obviously not Dirac Hermitian\, has a positive real discrete s pectrum\, generates unitary time evolution\, and thus defines a fully co nsistent and physical quantum theory. Evidently\, the axiom of Dirac Her miticity is too restrictive. While $H=p^2+ix^3$ is not Dirac Hermitian\, it is PT symmetric (invariant under combined space reflection P an time reversal T). The quantum mechanics defined by a PT-symmetric Hamiltonia n is a complex generalization of ordinary quantum mechanics. When quantu m mechanics is extended into the complex domain\, new kinds of theories having strange and remarkable properties emerge. Some of these propertie s have been studied and verified in beautiful laboratory experiments. A particularly interesting PT-symmetric Hamiltonian is $H=p^2-x^4$\, which has an upside-down potential. We explain in intuitive and in rigorous t erms why the energy levels of this potential are real\, positive\, and d iscrete.

Arnold Schwarzene gger plays the iconic and notoriously laconic (he has only 100 words of dialog) role of a cybernetic assassin sent back in time by the ruling ma chines from the far-flung future of 2029 to kill Sarah Conner (Linda Ham ilton)\, who will give birth to the boy who will grow up to be the leade r of the human resistance movement. Kyle (Michael Biehn) is the human re bel fighter tasked with saving Sarah. A chase movie par excellence em>\, the film not only spawned five sequels\, but instantiates the AI a rms race currently being discussed by in boardrooms and war rooms around the world. “\;It’\;s not just about what AI gets invented. & #160\;
Abstract: Perhaps the defining feature of the eukaryotic ce ll is its organization into membrane-bound compartments known as organel les. While the processes underlying the biogenesis of individual organel les are often well-known\, the precision with which individual cells exe rt quantitative control over individual organelle properties\, such as n umber and size\, and coordinate these properties at systems-scale across the cell’\;s many different types of organelles remain frontier pr oblems in cell biology and biophysics. Using a combination of theory and quantitative fluorescence imaging\, I will describe our recent efforts to show that cells exhibit substantial limits to the precision with whic h they can control organelle numbers and sizes\, but despite this appear to collectively organize organelle biogenesis into specific “\;mod es”\; to achieve homeostasis in cell size and growth rate.

DESCRIPTION:Event Location: Ackerman Hall Please join us on April 17\, 2024\, for a day of panel discuss
ions to promote procedures and best practices\, expand networks\, and di
scuss creative solutions and collaborative approaches to the challenges
of global work. “\;Have you ever had a dream\, Neo\, that you were
so sure was real?...How would you know the difference between the dream
world and the real world?”\; technoterroist Morpheus (Laurence Fish
burne) asks computer programmer/possible messiah Thomas Anderson (Keanu
Reeves)\, who goes by the nom de hacker Neo. With the help of M
orpheus\, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss)\, and a ragtag group of “\;unp
lugged”\; human rebels\, Neo learns that reality is in fact a simul
ation run by sentient machines powered by billions of humans in suspende
d animation—\;and that he might be The One who can manipulate and d
estroy these machines\, thereby liberating humanity. The turn-of-the-mil
lennium thriller somehow mainstreamed both Baudrillard and cyberpunk thr
ough innovative “\;bullet time”\; special effects\, startling
fight choreography by Hong Kong action legend Yuen Woo-ping\, and stunni
ng visuals by director siblings Lily and Lana Wachowski. While the film
won a host of technical Oscars\, its ability to interrogate the nature o
f free will through kinetic filmmaking and wall-to-wall ass-kicking ceme
nted it as one of the most well-loved and impactful blockbusters of all
time. More recently\, The Matrix’\;s themes of claiming on
e’\;s true identity\, and its depiction of transformative mental an
d physical experiences\, have led the film\, made by formerly closeted t
rans filmmakers\, to be embraced and celebrated as a trans allegory of s
elf-knowledge.

Featuring Cruise performing one of the crazi est stunts in movie history\, far more close-up magic than you might exp ect\, and a grab-bag of religious references and digitally-inflected esc hatology\, director Christopher McQuarrie stuffs the latest Mission: Impossible with ideas and thrills in (almost) equal measure. The g lobetrotting actioner reunites audiences with Hunt’\;s team-slash-a dopted-family—\;MI6 agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) and longtim e IMF best bros Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames)—\;while introducing us to professional thief Grace (Haley Atwell) and the myste rious Gabriel (Esai Morales)\, the Entity’\;s right-hand man\, who has a long history with Ethan. Come for handcuffed Cruise and Atwell car eening around the Spanish Steps in a stolen car and stay for the existen tial terror wrought by an untethered AI. Speaking of the latter: after a screening of the film at Camp David last year\, Joe Biden’\;s chie f of staff Bruce Reed said\, “\;If [the President] hadn'\;t alre ady been concerned about what could go wrong with AI before that movie\, he saw plenty more to worry about.”\;
