Outdoor Gallery Exhibition: 'Craig & Karl: Rear Vision'
Outdoor Gallery Exhibition: 'Craig & Karl: Rear Vision'

Brisbane City Council presents the latest Outdoor Gallery exhibition Craig & Karl: Rear Vision, co-curated by Carrie McCarthy and Angela Goddard, from 14 June to 20 October 2025.

Craig & Karl: Rear Vision is a dynamic, playful exploration of one of Queensland's most internationally successful creative exports. With their signature visual language defined by bold colour, graphic precision and infectious joy, the exhibition features some of Craig & Karl’s most celebrated series exploring themes of community, identity, imagination and love. Co-curated by Carrie McCarthy and Angela Goddard (from Griffith University Art Museum), Craig & Karl: Rear Vision includes many works never exhibited in Australia to serve as a homecoming prelude ahead of their Australian-exclusive exhibition and major public art interventions with Griffith University Art Museum and Brisbane Festival in September 2025.

Craig Redman & Karl Maier first teamed up in 1996 after meeting as students at the Queensland College of Art & Design, Brisbane. They came to attention as co-founders of design collective Rinzen before establishing themselves as collaborative duo Craig & Karl in 2011. Their beginnings in Brisbane continue to inform their practice, regularly incorporating homages to the city that helped launch their careers. Their dynamic aesthetic employs the artists’ signature message of humour, joy and optimism to explore themes of community, identity, imagination, and love.

Council’s Outdoor Gallery transforms Brisbane’s laneways and city streets into imaginative, curious and engaging spaces. We invite you to explore Brisbane’s hidden gems through Outdoor Gallery’s exhibition artworks found on light boxes and banners, in vitrines and as evening projections.

For more information, on public programming and associated events visit Council’s website.

Craig & Karl’s ‘Mateys’ (2025) are designed to enhance public spaces and promote active interaction. Employing bright shapes with the simplest of faces, these figures become expressive characters, welcoming us into corners of the city.

In this context, the Mateys serve as companions that help foster community and shared experiences.

This artwork will be featured on the Howard Smith Wharves Art Projection nightly (6-11pm), as well as on Museum of Brisbane's digital screen in their foyer.

80 years on: remembering Victory in the Pacific World War II tours
80 years on: remembering Victory in the Pacific World War II tours

Join us at Anzac Square this August for free guided tours exploring Australia’s involvement in the Pacific Campaign during World War II.

This year we mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific (VP80), the end of Australia’s involvement in World War II. On 15 August 1945 jubilant celebrations broke out across Australia after Imperial Japan unconditionally surrendered to Allied Forces, ending six long years of conflict. 80 years on we still remember the service, sacrifice and bravery of all the men and women who fought to defend our nation, values and way of life during this conflict.

As part of VP80 commemorations, join us for a free 45-minute tour exploring the war in the Pacific from Australia’s perspective. Tours depart at 10.30am, 11.30am and 12.30pm each Sunday for the month of August. Come along to discover:

  • the histories behind the World War II statues in Anzac Square
  • key campaigns and battles, such as Singapore, Kokoda, Milne Bay, Guadalcanal
  • the profound impact on the Australian Homefront, including the mobilisation of women and bombing of Townsville
  • personal stories of service personnel, such as Gunner William Thompson, a Japanese prisoner of war.
  • the post-war legacy and occupation of Japan.

Bookings are essential.

Location: Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
