Talk: Watermark Matches and the Dating of Seventeenth-Century Dutch Drawings

Join the Frick Art Research Library for a lecture introducing a new digital art history tool for dating seventeenth-century Dutch drawings. This talk will be presented at The Frick Collection and livestreamed via Zoom.

Since few drawings of the period were dated by artists, an exact match between a sheet’s watermark and one found in a dated print or archival document can serve as reliable chronological evidence. Drawing on his recently completed PhD thesis, C. Richard Johnson Jr., Professor Emeritus at Cornell University, will demonstrate how software-generated overlays allow the visual verification of the precision of watermark matches and how this method can help establish a chronological framework for works by lesser-studied artists. The lecture will conclude by encouraging the development of new libraries of watermarks in drawings, prints, and documents with inscribed creation dates. An audience Q&A session will follow the presentation.

Speaker bio
Rick Johnson, the Geoffrey S. M. Hedrick Senior Professor of Engineering Emeritus at Cornell University, retired in 2021 after 40 years on the Cornell faculty. He had switched his research focus to the emerging field of computational art history 14 years before his retirement. His focus became using digital image processing techniques to analyze matching manufactured patterns in art supports, principally thread density patterns in canvas supports of paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Johannes Vermeer and watermarks in the laid paper supports of prints by Rembrandt van Rijn and the codices of Leonardo da Vinci, effective as tools in attribution and dating analyses. After his retirement he pursued a PhD in Art History, which he completed in May 2026 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His thesis “Advances in Computational Art Connoisseurship” is available online at https://doi.org/10.5463/thesis.1668.

Margaret of Parma: A Life in Medals

Margaret of Parma (1522–1586) was a prominent Habsburg princess and important public figure in sixteenth-century Europe. Born an illegitimate daughter of Emperor Charles V, she was raised within the imperial household and eventually married to Alessandro de’ Medici, Duke of Florence, and later to Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza and nephew of Pope Paul III. In 1559, she was appointed Governor-General of the Netherlands by her half-brother Philip II of Spain, becoming one of the most powerful women in Europe. Margaret’s image was carefully fashioned through official portraiture and, notably, through medals. In this inaugural Stephen K. and Janie Woo Scher Lecture in the History of Commemorative Medals, distinguished scholar Davide Gasparotto will follow the main events of her life through a close examination of medals commissioned by her or her entourage, showing how they functioned not merely as likenesses, but as political tools, projecting Margaret’s identity and authority across the territories she governed.

Registration is required for this free event. Registration includes complimentary museum admission starting at 4:30 p.m. Only children ages 10 and older are admitted.

Speaker bio

Davide Gasparotto is currently Senior Curator of Paintings and Chair, Curatorial Affairs, at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. He studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and began his career as Curator at the National Gallery of Parma, Italy. Before joining the Getty Museum in 2014, he was the Director of the Galleria Estense in Modena. He specializes in painting, sculpture, and the decorative arts of the Renaissance; on the rediscovery of classical antiquity between the Middle Ages and the eighteenth century; and on the history of collecting. He has published extensively on Italian and European art from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, including studies focused on Antonello da Messina, Valerio Belli, Giovanni Bellini, Bonacolsi l’Antico, Sandro Botticelli, Giambologna, Parmigianino, Piero della Francesca, Pontormo, Andrea Riccio, and Peter Paul Rubens.

Goya's Musical World: Francisco Fullana, Violin; Dolphins String Quartet; Viano Quartet; Rafael Aguirre, Guitar

Sunday, October 18, 2026, 5 – 7pm

Violinist and musical curator Francisco Fullana opens the season with an inventive program that approaches artist Francisco de Goya not through paint but through sound, imagining the music that animated the painter's world. Joined by the Dolphins Quartet, Viano Quartet, and guitarist Rafael Aguirre, Fullana explores Goya from three vantage points. The courtly world of aristocratic patronage emerges in Boccherini's Guitar Quintet, heard in an arrangement for full ensemble. The folk and popular traditions of Goya’s Spain—the tonadillas and zarzuelas of working-class Madrid—ﬁnd a vivid parallel in the Goya painting, The Forge. The program culminates with Mauricio Sotelo's Red Inner Light Sculpture, a striking contemporary work for ensemble and featuring a ﬂamenco dancer. Together these perspectives evoke the vibrant musical life Goya cultivated in his own home, where the ﬁnest musicians of his day gathered for evenings of song and dance.

The Frick continues its partnership with two of the world's most celebrated conservatories—the Juilliard School and the Royal Academy of Music—with a series of weekday lunchtime concerts featuring student musicians from both institutions. Juilliard415, the school's acclaimed period-instrument ensemble, performs three programs across the fall and winter. In the spring, musicians from London's Royal Academy of Music offer one lunchtime performance, and take part in the weekend of concerts curated by the composer, Matthew Aucoin.

In the short-form memoir accompanied by full-color illustrations, Matar embarks on an ekphrastic—descriptive—meditation guided by Sienese painters such as Ambrogio Lorenzetti and Duccio. As the writer travels through convergences of the city and its art, he finds familiarity and meaning in concentrated looking.

The book is available through The New York Public Library and other libraries.

In the founding decades of the Republic, small Yankee towns built their own identity out of homegrown counterpoint—fervent settings of grief, mortality, and civic conscience by composers such as William Billings, Daniel Read, and their contemporaries. Featuring singers Lily Hammond, Linnea Sablosky, Tim Eriksen, and bass John Taylor Ward, Ruckus offers, in the year of the country’s 250th anniversary, a window into the music a young nation.

Drawing From the Figure

Practice a variety of drawing techniques in this after-hours workshop led by artist and educator Chris Gartrell. Participants will be guided through sketching activities in the Frick’s galleries, drawing inspiration from figurative sculpture in the special exhibition Siena: The Art of Bronze, 1450–1500, before creating studies from a clothed figure model in the Ian Wardropper Education Room. Explore the possibilities of line, gesture, tone, and space in a small group with hands-on instruction, and develop a personal drawing style using a range of provided materials, including pencil, Conté crayon, and toned papers.

Registration is $50 ($40 for Frick members). This class is open to registrants of all skill levels, and materials are provided. Space is limited to 15 registrants. If registration is full and you would like to join the waitlist, please email draw@frick.org.

Tickets are non-refundable. Registration includes complimentary museum admission starting one hour before the program. Only children ages 10 and older are admitted.

Chris Gartrell is an artist and educator based in Brooklyn, New York, with a B.A. from Wesleyan University and an M.F.A. from CUNY Hunter College. His studio practice is in drawing and painting, and he has worked in museum education at The Frick Collection, the Jewish Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Following his performances with Jupiter Ensemble to inaugurate the Frick’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Auditorium in April 2025, Anthony Roth Costanzo returns with a program tied to his latest project: Countertenor, a new book for Farrar, Straus and Giroux and companion recording on Nonesuch Records. Both illuminate the countertenor voice as an instrument of reinvention—part oddity, part divinity. Costanzo brings the album to the Frick stage with an ensemble led by Dan Schlosberg. Seventeenth-century Baroque laments by Monteverdi and Dowland give way to a Mozart duet, a Hawaiian song, and avant-gardist Klaus Nomi's “You Don't Own Me.” Costanzo also performs a 2024 work written for him by Osvaldo Golijov, concluding with a hypnotic aria from Philip Glass's iconic Einstein on the Beach.

Fifteenth-century Siena was no silent city—its churches and streets carried chant, bells, processions, and devotional song—yet little of its notated polyphony survives, and almost none can be tied to a local composer. Led from the vielle by Jasper Snow, this program gathers pieces preserved in or near Sienese sources, several recovered from reused parchment. Works by Antonio da Cividale, Johannes Ciconia, and Zacara da Teramo set these surviving fragments within the international sound-world of the early fifteenth century, where Italian and French styles met in music of restless rhythmic and contrapuntal invention; alongside them are anonymous love songs and devotional works for local saints. Like the bronzes on view in the exhibition, this music poses a question of survival: sculpture endures as matter; music endures only through copying, loss, and dispersal—traced here from manuscript back to living sound.

Over two evenings, the British pianist Paul Lewis—celebrated for the lucidity of his Beethoven and Schubert—brings his Mozart+ project to the Frick, pairing Mozart’s sonatas with works by later composers. The Saturday concert explores Mozart through a French lens, framing Poulenc’s mercurial Improvisations and Debussy’s L’isle joyeuse with the sonatas K. 330 and K. 457. Sunday's concert delves into the piano’s cantabile singing voice: the Sonatas K. 570 and the operatic K. 333 surround Schubert’s late Drei Klavierstücke, D. 946, and a Chopin polonaise and two nocturnes. Together the recitals show Mozart’s presence surfacing in the music that came after him.

Paul Lewis, Solo Piano

Over two evenings, the British pianist Paul Lewis—celebrated for the lucidity of his Beethoven and Schubert—brings his Mozart+ project to the Frick, pairing Mozart’s sonatas with works by later composers. The Saturday concert explores Mozart through a French lens, framing Poulenc’s mercurial Improvisations and Debussy’s L’isle joyeuse with the sonatas K. 330 and K. 457. Sunday's concert delves into the piano’s cantabile singing voice: the Sonatas K. 570 and the operatic K. 333 surround Schubert’s late Drei Klavierstücke, D. 946, and a Chopin polonaise and two nocturnes. Together the recitals show Mozart’s presence surfacing in the music that came after him.

Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy have played as a duo since their student days, and their Frick debut finds them together and alone, in a program that moves from intimacy to extremity. They share a single keyboard for Schubert's Hungarian Divertissement and, to close, Beethoven's four-hand arrangement of the Grosse Fuge. In between, each plays solo: Chopin nocturnes, Ustvolskaya's explosive Sixth Sonata, and Beethoven’s late Piano Sonata in E Major, Op. 109.

Drawing From the Figure

Ian Wardropper Education Room

Practice a variety of drawing techniques in this after-hours workshop led by artist and educator Chris Gartrell. Participants will be guided through sketching activities in the Frick’s galleries, drawing inspiration from figurative sculpture in the special exhibition Siena: The Art of Bronze, 1450–1500, before creating studies from a clothed figure model in the Ian Wardropper Education Room. Explore the possibilities of line, gesture, tone, and space in a small group with hands-on instruction, and develop a personal drawing style using a range of provided materials, including pencil, Conté crayon, and toned papers.

Registration is $50 ($40 for Frick members). This class is open to registrants of all skill levels, and materials are provided. Space is limited to 15 registrants. If registration is full and you would like to join the waitlist, please email draw@frick.org.

Tickets are non-refundable. Registration includes complimentary museum admission starting one hour before the program. Only children ages 10 and older are admitted.

In 1705, a 20-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach traveled more than 250 miles on foot to study with composer and organist Dieterich Buxtehude. Avery Fisher Grant recipients Jay Campbell, cello (JACK Quartet), and Geneva Lewis, violin, join renowned keyboardist and conductor Jonathan Cohen for a program drawing on this monumental meeting, featuring works from both composers alongside other masters of the Baroque era.

Offered in connection with the special exhibition Kent Monkman: Officer and Laughing Girl, this program will focus on Monkman’s dialogue with Johannes Vermeer.

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Active participation is encouraged.

A repeat session of this program will be held on Saturday, February 20, at 9:00 AM.

Isidore Quartet; Conrad Tao, Piano

The New York–based Isidore String Quartet makes its Frick debut with a program partly inspired by a teacher and his pupil. Frank Bridge's Three Idylls (1906) sit beside the Three Divertimenti of Benjamin Britten, who studied with Bridge as a teenager and later built his Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge on the second of Bridge’s Idylls. Mozart's String Quartet No. 21 in D Major, K. 575, closes the first half, the first of the "Prussian" quartets, composed with Prussia's cello-playing king in mind and giving that instrument rare prominence. After intermission, star pianist Conrad Tao joins the quartet for Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 44, the work that established the piano quintet as a genre.

The Frick continues its partnership with two of the world’s most celebrated conservatories—the Juilliard School and the Royal Academy of Music—with a series of weekday lunchtime concerts featuring student musicians from both institutions. Juilliard415, the school's acclaimed period-instrument ensemble, performs three programs in the fall. In the spring, musicians from London’s Royal Academy of Music offer one lunchtime performance, and take part in the weekend of concerts curated by the composer, Matthew Aucoin.

Mezzo-soprano Rihab Chaieb and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz weave together two ways of hearing the Middle East and North Africa as imagined by European composers, and as lived and sung by its own people. Alongside French art song that gazes outward—Ravel's folk settings and the Persian and Arab evocations of Saint-Saëns, Bizet, and Aubert—they set songs from Osvaldo Golijov's Mediterranean cycle Ayre, the Andalusian muwashshah Lamma bada yatathanna, Fairuz's lament for Beirut, and a traditional Tunisian song from Chaieb's own heritage.
