60\;<br><br>Possession and trance were signs of weak minds in the eighte
enth century\, yet many\, even those in privileged positions\, reported
visions\, near-death experiences\, and intense dreams. These altered sta
tes led thinkers to become more creative\, to rely on their own experien
ce rather than traditional authority\, and to become more compassionate.
These experiences also opened the doors to subversive\, groundbreaking
thought\, which led to revolutionary action. Altered states were not a h

er is a cultural historian specializing in early modern France. Her firs
t book\,&#160\;<em>Tracing the Shadow of Secrecy and Government Transpar

scholarship. It examines how Indigenous wisdom and ancient contemplativ
e practices can support modern teachers and scholars. At the Center for
the Study of World Religions\, she will be conducting research for her c
urrent book project\,&#160\;<em>Power\, Possession\, and the Modern Self

ism emerged in the mid-1800s from New England Unitarianism and European
Romanticism. It distinguished itself by rejecting convention\, challengi
ng traditional religious doctrines of authority and election\, opposing
dominant philosophies\, discarding genteel literary styles\, and defying
political complacency regarding slavery\, gender inequality\, and disen
franchisement. At Harvard\, Transcendentalists were seen as mystics\, mi
 sfits\, rogues\, and dissidents. Their refusals\, however\, sparked a so
cial movement based on friendship and collaboration\, united by a radica
l spirituality promising personal renewal and social transformation.&#16
0\; This reading group invites participants to explore both sides of tha
t legacy. We&#39\;ll focus on Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Henry David Thoreau
\, and Margaret Fuller in the fall\, and on figures including Bronson Alc

d Caroline Dall in the spring.&#160\;<br>&#160\;&#160\;<br>RUSSELL C. PO

elevance to modern ecological thought\, particularly as an architect of
the concept of &#8220\;nature&#8221\; and its religious and political re

 ichael Prettyman&#8217\;s work&#160\;operates&#160\;at the intersection
of contemporary painting and the study of religion\,&#160\;engaging&#160
\;the problem of how the sacred is apprehended within lived experience.
Drawing on his training in comparative religion and studio practice\, he
treats painting as an inquiry into&#160\;perception\, attention\, and t
 he instability of meaning.&#160\;&#160\;<br>&#160\;&#160\;<br>His compos
itions often depict shifting terrains\, ambiguous light sources\, and fo
rms that hover between emergence and dissolution. These visual strategie
s parallel apophatic and phenomenological approaches found across mystic
al traditions\, where knowledge proceeds through unknowing and direct en
counter rather than representation. &#160\;<br>&#160\;&#160\;<br>In para
llel with his artistic practice\, Prettyman teaches and writes on mystic
ism\, tracing structural resonances across traditions while emphasizing
experiential insight over doctrine. His ongoing work with academic and r
eligious communities situates his practice within a broader discourse\,
where painting functions not as illustration\, but as a site for testing
the conditions under which the sacred becomes perceptible.

ism emerged in the mid-1800s from New England Unitarianism and European
