Sonata Night 60: Mendelssohn and Brahms

Under the direction of NEC faculty pianist Pei-Shan Lee, Sonata Night is an evening of piano-instrumental masterworks featuring collaborative pianists in partnership with their instrumental colleagues.

Sonata, a musical term of several meanings, is used here to signify a duo form of equal partnership. Sonata Night programming spans a wide range of musical styles and features the world's greatest duo works from the Baroque through the 20th century, including compositional forms such as multi-movement suites and character pieces.

Sonata Night performers are coached jointly by faculty of the collaborative piano and instrumental departments.

Town Hall Cadenzas: How Musicians Underscore Words, Ideas, and Hope

In this conversation, workshop, and feedback session, composer Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) will discuss his forthcoming commission for the American Composers Orchestra, America, To US, for electric violin, orchestra, and people. DBR’s town hall cadenzas allow audience members to participate in this work, and he will present his ideas on the responsibilities of community-based composition. This project builds on the artist-in-residence model that has been a part of much of DBR's career, and he will discuss how this model has been effective for both artistic and financial stability and growth.

Artist(s): Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) is a Black, Haitian-American composer, violinist, educator, and social entrepreneur. His work often centers on collaboration among artists, institutions, and communities. He is an associate and institute professor at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and a senior artist at SOZO Media. Daniel’s work spans chamber, orchestral, opera, television, film, theater, and dance. He composed music for the film Ailey (Sundance oﬃcial selection) and served as music director and principal composer for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. His music has been presented by institutions including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Sydney Opera House, the Kennedy Center, the Dutch National Opera, and the American Composers Orchestra., Daniel is a Creative Capital grantee, Hermitage Artist Retreat fellow, and Civitella Ranieri Music Fellow. His honors include the American Academy in Rome Goddard Lieberson Fellowship, two regional Emmy Awards, the National Sawdust Disruptor Award, and the Sphinx Organization’s Arthur L. Johnson Award. He served on the board of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, including as vice chair, and currently serves on the board of the League of American Orchestras. Daniel earned his doctorate from the University of Michigan and his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University., Daniel is a Fellow of the inaugural cohort of the Michael D. Eisner Arts & Culture Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.

Tonight's concert is a collaboration among NEC Chamber Singers, CMA students Yilin Chen (percussion) and Avi Randall (piano), percussionist Abel Zhou, and students in two Liberal Arts classes taught by Patrick Keppel, The Art of the Monologue and Storytelling and Shakespeare: The Tragedies. Part of the NEC chorus department's "Great Music for a Great Space" series, the evening will feature music and readings inspired by the eerie mood associated with late October. Erica J. NEC Touring Children's Opera | Little Red Riding Hood

Kick off your day of Halloween family fun with Seymour Barab's Little Red Riding Hood! Our annual children's show is the perfect way to introduce kids (and adults!) to the magic and mystery of opera.

Come early and join New England Conservatory's Early Childhood Department from 9:30-10:00 am for musical crafts in the lobby! Decorate your own Little Red Riding Hood basket, follow a winding musical path through the woods, and gather clues about the characters and music you’ll hear. Then enter the opera ready to imagine, wonder, and listen! After the show, collect NEC treats in your basket!

Run time is approximately 60 minutes. Children of all ages are welcome, and Halloween costumes are encouraged!

Stage direction by Steven Goldstein. Musical direction by Joel Ayau and Sepehr Davalloukhoungar.

This performance is a yearly collaboration between the Community Performances and Partnerships and Opera Studies programs.

Dr. Kristen Dority has been a practicing Kois Dentist for 20+ years, and specializes in wellness dentistry options such as CandidPro, Invisalign, and Bioclear. Alongside the beauty of cosmetics, Dr. Dority has deep admiration for the beauty of the vocal arts as well! Dr. Dority is always looking for ways to give back to her patients - and what better way to do so than to offer a solo vocal and piano recital!

Madison Fitzpatrick, Parkside Dental Care’s Practice Administrator, is an NEC Alumni from the Class of 2020. She’s recently performed at Carnegie Hall with Anthony Roth Costanzo, and has performed notable roles such as Donna Elvira from Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, Gabriel from Haydn’s “Creation”, Helena from Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream", and Elle from Poulenc’s “La Voix Humaine”.

Tom Ponti is a classically trained musician who has been playing piano for 50 years. After a 30 year career as an Executive in Financial Services, Tom worked for the Berklee College of Music as the Accompanist Supervisor for their Voice Department. Tom has been studying both solo and collaborative (ensemble) piano at the New England Conservatory for the past 10 years.

We hope that you stop by Williams Hall at 7pm on Halloween Night to hear some spooky soprano and piano repertoire from composers such as Mendelssohn, Strauss, Larsen, Dobrowen, Lukinyekh, Saint-Saens, and more!

Artist(s): Pavel Nersessian is widely regarded by musicians, critics and listeners as one of the most refined and inwardly powerful pianists of his generation. He has been touring Russia and neighboring countries since the age of eight and has performed in many of the world’s major cultural centers, including London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Cannes, Leipzig, Vienna, Budapest, Madrid, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Dublin, Munich, Caracas, Rio de Janeiro, Belgrade, Cairo, Kiev, Beijing, Shanghai, and numerous other cities., A graduate of the Central Music School of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Nersessian later continued his education under Professor Sergei Dorensky. He graduated in 1987 with the highest honors and was immediately invited to join the Conservatory faculty. For more than three decades, he assisted Professor Dorensky and worked closely with an extraordinary circle of students, including Nikolai Lugansky, Denis Matsuev, Olga Kern, Alexander Shtarkman, Pavel Kolesnikov. He worked with Alexander Malofeev, Zlata Chochieva, Alexander Kliuchko and many others., Nersessian has won prizes at major international competitions, including the Beethoven Competition in Vienna, the Paloma O’Shea Competition in Santander, the Tokyo Competition, and the Dublin International Piano Competition, where he received First Prize in 1991. The Irish Times wrote after his Dublin victory: “His performance brought a veritable roar of approval from the audience.” In 2005, he was awarded the title Merited Artist of the Russian Federation., Beyond the recital stage, Nersessian is deeply engaged in collaborative music-making. By special invitation from the Kirov and Perm Ballet companies, he performed the solo piano part in Balanchine’s Ballet Imperial (to Tchaikovsky’s Second Piano Concerto) at the Kirov, Bolshoi, Châtelet, and Covent Garden theaters. He also appeared in Jerome Robbins’ ballet The Concert, or The Perils of Everybody, set to music by Chopin. His love of opera, cultivated since childhood, naturally draws him to frequent collaborations with singers and instrumentalists alike., He has worked with ensembles and artists such as the Borodin and Glinka Quartets, the National Symphony Orchestra of Russia, Thomas Sanderling, Tugan Sokhiev, Philippe Cassard, Alexandre Lazarev, Diana Vishneva, Yulia Lezhneva, Valentin Uryupin, Maxim Emelyanychev, Lukas Geniushas and many others. Since 2013, he has served as Professor of Piano at Boston University and has given masterclasses throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. He is also a regular jury member at major international piano competitions. In 2022 he started to teach at New England Conservatory., Yet it is Nersessian’s artistic ethos that most distinguishes him. His playing is often described as possessing an almost painful intensity of expression, a sense of lived experience brought to the point of physical presence. His performances appeal to the deepest layers of the listener’s unconscious, bypassing social and cultural defenses and speaking directly to something vulnerable and essential., Marked by intellectual clarity, taste, and restraint from external display, his interpretations create a sense of intimacy and chamber-like refinement. Nersessian belongs to that group of artists for whom personal aesthetic truth matters more than commercial success. , “...sometimes it is more important to forget about yourself and remember that MUSICAL goals are important...” said Nersessian in one of the interviews.

First Monday at Jordan Hall: Hungarian Pathways and Appalachian Trails

A celebration of the grand traditions circling one of our important European peer institutions, the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Star violin alum Tessa Lark will return to the Jordan Hall stage to explore music with folk roots from the great Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. Taking Bartók’s example as intrepid musical explorer, Tessa and distinguished faculty members Eden MacAdam-Somer and Mike Block from the CMA Department will enliven the Jordan Hall stage with music rooted from Appalachia to the Carpathians, and beyond. Soprano Dani Jingdan Zhang (‘26 AD) and Rafe Lei Schaberg will present two songs from the 19th century Hungarian phenomenon himself, Franz Liszt. Finally, a marvelous ensemble of faculty and alums will anchor Ernst von Dohnányi’s very colorful sextet.

For more than 40 years, First Monday at Jordan Hall has been a cornerstone of New England Conservatory’s musical community, bringing together acclaimed faculty, distinguished alumni, exceptional students, and guest artists for unforgettable chamber music performances.

Founded by renowned cellist Laurence Lesser and now curated by three Artistic Co-Chairs — violist Nicholas Cords, violinist Soovin Kim, and pianist HaeSun Paik — the series celebrates the artistry, collaboration, and spirit of discovery that define NEC.

This concert is a special partnership with Music for Food, a musician-led initiative to help relieve food insecurity across the nation. As always, admission is free with your ticket. Should you wish to donate to help those of us who remain food insecure, 100% of your gift goes to support Food for Free.
Donations can be made before the concert and during intermission in the inner lobby area. Suggested donations are $40/adult, $15/student.

Branching Out: Crafting Interdisciplinary Performances

Musicians striving to deepen audience engagement in musical performance can benefit from exploring theatre, dance, and visual art forms. Collaborating across disciplines and incorporating extramusical elements into the creative process often results in deeper connections to the music and audiences. Collaborative performance artist C. Neil Parsons has built a career as A) a Musician, B) an Actor, C) a Dancer, and D) All of the Above.

In this workshop, Neil shares insights from nearly three decades of creating and touring interdisciplinary performance experiences, offering advice for musicians and teaching artists who are curious to branch out and embark upon non-traditional career paths. Discussion topics include interdisciplinary approaches to developing performance skills and musical interpretation; creating and seeking out new performance opportunities; commissioning vs. arranging repertoire; and authentic vs. definitive performance practices.

Artist(s): C. Neil Parsons is a bass trombonist, dancer, actor, and arts educator who has spent a lifetime onstage, appearing in his first professional theater production at age three. Extensive touring has taken him to 45 states, with engagements at major performing arts centers, residencies at numerous universities, and guest appearances with symphony orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Beyond his versatility across music, theater, and dance productions, Parsons is best known for blending his skills in interdisciplinary artworks., In 2010, Parsons cofounded the hybrid arts ensemble The Fourth Wall. Praised by the Wall Street Journal for their “deft choreography,” the trio has toured widely with their neo-vaudeville production Fruit Flies Like a Banana and their circus show Without a Net. For nine seasons, Parsons performed with Tales & Scales, an ensemble that devised and toured innovative “musictales” for children and family audiences, serving as co-artistic director from 2006 to 2008. In addition to ongoing collaborations with Zara Lawler / The Flute on its Feet, Shakespeare's Ear, and the Seattle Modern Orchestra, Neil has created and toured the solo shows A Thousand Words and 50% Nonverbal., Parsons is a graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, where he declared an individual major in Interdisciplinary Performance and Education. In 2015, he joined the inaugural class of Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s graduate program in Contemporary Classical Music Performance. Neil is an Assistant Professor at Boston Conservatory, teaching across the Theater, Music, and Dance Divisions.

New England Conservatory celebrates the centennial anniversaries of American composers Earle Brown and Morton Feldman, with special guest Christian Wolff.

NEC faculty Stephen Drury created the Callithumpian Consort in the belief that new music should be an exciting adventure shared by performers and listeners alike, and that the brand-new masterpieces of our day are beautiful, sensuous, challenging, delightful, provocative, and a unique joy. Callithumpian’s repertoire is the new and unusual, encompassing a huge stylistic spectrum from the classics of the last 100 years to works of the avant-garde and experimental jazz and rock. It is grounded in the musical discoveries of John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Zorn, Giacinto Scelsi, Morton Feldman, and Iannis Xenakis.

The Earle Brown/Morton Feldman Centennial Celebration at New England Conservatory was made possible in part by a generous contribution from the Earle Brown Music Foundation Charitable Trust.

Boston Modern Orchestra Project Presents: Delight of the Muses

Boston Early Music Festival Presents: Les Arts Florissants

For the first time since the 40th anniversary of Les Arts Florissants in 2019, Baroque masters William Christie and Paul Agnew reunite to direct a revelatory program of Monteverdi’s finest madrigals for mixed voices. Explore the madrigal in a variety of styles from the purest polyphonic settings to pieces rich in dissonances through more elaborate works evoking dance. The program culminates in a performance of the iconic Il Combattimento (The Combat of Tancred and Clorinda), an inventive showcase of Monteverdi’s dramatic genius. The legendary William Christie returns to Boston to lead the continuo from the harpsichord, and Paul Agnew will lead and sing in the vocal ensemble, joining rising stars from the next generation of Baroque singers.

Artist(s): Minsoo Sohn is a Korean-American pianist known for his musical intelligence and masterful virtuosity. Described by the New York Times as “a genuine artist, with a thoughtful and poetic interpretation,” and by the Boston Globe as “born to play the piano,” Sohn continues to expand his reputation as one of the foremost pianists of his day. Sohn has toured extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, Israel, and Korea, appearing in important venues and festivals., Sohn is particularly noted for his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, and the New York Times praised his Honens label recording of the work as a “beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation,” placing it as one of the top classical recordings of 2011. His recordings also received critical acclaim from New Yorker Magazine, Plain Dealer, Gramophone, Calgary Herald, and Toronto Star among others., In 2020, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Mr. Sohn concluded his four-year immersion in the composer’s music, which included a concert series, recordings, and writings. Over the course of his Beethoven project, Mr. Sohn performed and recorded the composer’s thirty-two sonatas in a series of recitals at Seoul Arts Center and recording sessions at Tongyeong Concert Hall. The recital series also included Beethoven’s monumental Diabelli Variations and Bagatelles. Sony Classical released the highly anticipated nine-album set of “Complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas” in the Fall of 2020., He held positions at Michigan State University and Korean National University of Arts before joining his alma mater, New England Conservatory, in the Fall of 2023., He is indebted to Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun for guiding him to follow his bliss.

Artist(s): Clayton Stephenson, Piano, American pianist and NEC Concert Artist Clayton Stephenson ’23 NEC/Harvard, ’27 AD has a love for music that is immediately apparent in his joyous charisma onstage, expressive power, and natural ease at the instrument. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone), he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making., Stephenson grew up in New York City, started piano lessons at age 7, and the next year was accepted into The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program — a full scholarship program for disadvantaged students — where he lingered to watch student recitals and fell in love with music. Stephenson practiced on a synthesizer at home until he found an old upright piano on the street. For the next six years, that would be his practice piano, until, at age 17, he received a new piano from the Lang Lang Foundation., Stephenson credits the generous support of community programs that provided him with musical inspiration and resources along the way. As he describes it, the “Third Street Music School jump-started my music education; the Young People’s Choir taught me phrasing and voicing; Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program introduced me to formal and rigorous piano training, which enabled me to get into Juilliard Pre-College; the Morningside Music Bridge validated my talent and elevated my self-confidence; the Boy’s Club of New York exposed me to jazz; and the Lang Lang Foundation brought me to stages worldwide and transformed me from a piano student to a young artist.”, Recent seasons have included concerto performances with the Houston, North Carolina, Virginia, and Cincinnati symphonies; festival appearances at Grand Teton, Grant Park, and Tippet Rise; recitals at the John F. Singing for the Invisible People

Requiem For America tackles the genocidal founding of America across the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, in three installments. Each Requiem consists of 19 movements and opens with the same Movement #1, “The Doctrine of Discovery,” that authorized colonizers to subjugate Indigenous peoples. Each Requiem ends with the same Movement #19, “Threnodia: We Are Still Here.”

"My vision is to tour Requiem to all 50 states, plus D.C. Each performance will feature Indigenous singers recruited from local tribal communities, an essential element to the mission: To create cultural catharsis as we speak the truth of the country’s genesis. Through truth-singing, we can collectively recount and face the nation’s blood-soaked nativity. This is a pivotal moment for a project I have nurtured on my own until now. After 20 years, I have found a collaborator, White Snake Projects, an activist performance company, to develop, support and premiere the work. WSP believes in the power of this work, not just artistically but in terms of what it can do for truth-telling. Together, we will be premiering the first Requiem in 2026, initially with the BBC on May 17th and then in Boston on November 14th."

Artist(s): Gunther Schuller was an American composer, conductor, horn player, author, historian, educator, publisher, and jazz musician who served as president of the New England Conservatory (1967-1977) where he formalized NEC’s commitment to jazz by establishing the first degree-granting jazz program at a major classical conservatory in 1969. Shortly thereafter, he instituted the Third Stream department, subsequently named the Contemporary Improvisation Department and now Contemporary Musical Arts, to explore the regions where the two musical “streams” of classical and jazz meet and mingle (Schuller coined the term “Third Stream” during a lecture he gave at Brandeis University in 1957). He hired the iconic Ran Blake to be the department’s chair. Early jazz hires included the legendary Jaki Byard and George Russell., Schuller composed more than 180 works, spanning all musical genres including solo works, orchestral works, chamber music, opera, and jazz. Among Schuller’s orchestral works are Symphony (1965), Seven Studies of Paul Klee (1959), An Arc Ascending (1996), Four Soundscapes, and Shapes and Designs. Schuller’s large-scale work, Of Reminiscences and Reflections, was composed as a tribute to his wife of 49 years, Marjorie Black. In addition to composing for the standard concerto instruments — piano, violin, horn etc. — Schuller also wrote concertos for instruments that had been previously neglected in the concerto repertoire, such as the alto saxophone, bassoon, contrabassoon, organ, and double bass. Schuller also composed a number of works for solo ensemble with orchestra or, in some cases, band. Examples include Contrasts for Wind Quintet and Orchestra (1967), Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra, Diptych for Brass Quintet and Concert Band (1967), and Eine kleine Posaunemusik for trombone and band (1980)., In addition to his musical compositions, Schuller wrote several books of note. These include Horn Technique (1962), Early Jazz: its Roots and Musical Development (1968) and its sequel, Swing Era: the Development of Jazz, 1930-1945, as well as The Compleat Conductor (1997).

Today, the Busoni Competition regards the format of a music competition first and foremost as a stage open to exceptional young talents, all of whom deserve to be heard and appreciated.

2026, for the first time, the Busoni Competition will enter its new edition under the name Glocal Piano Festival, hosted by renowned concert series and promoters on three continents.

Between November 8 and 30, the Glocal Piano Festival will present nine “piano marathons” in Boston, Miami, Shanghai, Tokyo, Rome, Florence, Vienna, Paris and Dortmund, featuring a total of 120 pianists. The young artists, performing a repertoire of their own choosing, will appear before an attentive and discerning audience. The festival will thus offer a highly relevant insight into the musical skill and interpretation of the new generation of pianists.

A professional jury will select the majority of the candidates who will advance to the final stages of the competition in Bolzano, Italy, in 2027. But—and this is particularly important —the audience in each city will also be invited to vote for one candidate who will advance directly to the finals, independently of the jury’s decision.

Rediscovering, understanding, and interpreting masterpieces in an ever-new light also means rejuvenating our own ways of thinking and listening. This is precisely what makes this initiative so compelling: its ability to build anticipation and create an authentic cultural experience.

Busoni and Boston
Ferruccio Busoni’s connection with Boston occupies a distinctive place in his artistic journey. In 1891, he arrived in the city to teach piano and composition at the New England Conservatory, an appointment that marked the beginning of his American career. While his tenure as a teacher was brief, Busoni enjoyed a long and successful relationship with the Boston musical scene, appearing as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra no fewer than 34 times between 1891 and 1911. His performances introduced audiences to the breadth of his virtuosity and musical vision, helping to secure his international reputation as one of the leading pianists of his age. Boston was also the setting for several of Busoni’s own recitals. He appeared at Jordan Hall on at least four occasions between 1904 and 1915, presenting programs that ranged from Bach and Beethoven to Liszt, Chopin, Brahms, and his own celebrated Bach transcriptions. Today, these appearances remain a testament to the enduring bond between Busoni and one of America’s great musical capitals.

Breaking the Ensemble Mold: Student Agency, Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Creative Music-Making

This interactive workshop challenges educators to rethink traditional definitions of musical literacy and explore broader ways of knowing, creating, and communicating through music. Artist(s): Stephanie A. Muñoz was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, and moved to Boston in 2012 to pursue graduate studies in saxophone performance. She is a proud alumna of the New England Conservatory (MM ’15, GD ’17) and holds a Bachelor of Music Education (K–12) from New Mexico State University (2012)., Soon after arriving in Boston, Stephanie became deeply engaged in the city’s music education community. She served as a teaching fellow through NEC and worked as a teaching artist with organizations including Young Audiences of Massachusetts and The Metropolitan Opera, while also maintaining her own private lesson studio., Stephanie’s Mexican heritage and bilingualism are among her greatest strengths, allowing her to build authentic connections with students and families and to serve her community with cultural pride. She is currently in her ninth year of teaching at Margarita Muñiz Academy, the only bilingual public high school in New England. Amazingly, two legends of the string playing world shared a birthday 150 years ago on the 29th of December, 1876; violist Lionel Tertis and cellist Pablo Casals. The December concert will pay tribute to both of these trailblazers. Especially relevant today is the enduring contribution by Casals as a deeply devoted humanist and advocate for peace. In the very midst of our community is Casals’ godson, cello faculty Lluís Claret, who will bring life music composed by the great Catalonian artist. The evening also features contributions from NEC’s Conductor’s Choir and our new professional piano trio in residence hailing from London, The Paddington Trio.

For more than 40 years, First Monday at Jordan Hall has been a cornerstone of New England Conservatory’s musical community, bringing together acclaimed faculty, distinguished alumni, exceptional students, and guest artists for unforgettable chamber music performances.

Founded by renowned cellist Laurence Lesser and now curated by three Artistic Co-Chairs — violist Nicholas Cords, violinist Soovin Kim, and pianist HaeSun Paik — the series celebrates the artistry, collaboration, and spirit of discovery that define NEC.

Artist(s): Trumpeter, composer, and educator Jason Palmer is one of the most in demand musicians of his generation. He has performed with Roy Haynes, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Smith (the organist), Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ravi Coltrane, Mark Turner, Jeff Ballard, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Common, Roy Hargrove, Lewis Nash., Having made Boston, MA, his home for 22 years, Jason was recently named to the inaugural class of the Boston Artist in Residence Fellowship for Music Composition. In addition to performing on over forty albums as a sideman, Jason has recorded 14 albums under his own name on labels Ayva, Steeplechase, Newvelle, and most recently with Giant Step Arts. Four of his recordings were reviewed by Downbeat Magazine, all receiving four stars or better. Jason has toured in over 30 countries with saxophonists Mark Turner, Greg Osby, Grace Kelly, and Matana Roberts and has been a featured guest artist on multiple projects in Portugal, Mexico, Canada, and Russia., For the past fifteen years, Jason’s quintet has been the house band every weekend at Boston’s historic Wally’s Jazz Café. He has presented his band at numerous clubs throughout the northeast United States including the Tanglewood Jazz Fest, Sculler’s Jazz Club, the Stone in NYC, the Jazz Gallery in NYC, and the Beantown Jazz Festival. In 2007 Jason Palmer was commissioned by the Festival of New Trumpet Music in NYC to premier a new work (based on a Sudoku game) for his quintet at the Jazz Standard. The music from that suite was later featured on his 2016 recording on SteepleChase entitled Beauty ‘n’ Numbers: The Sudoku Suite., In addition to a heavy performing schedule, Jason Palmer offers his passion for improvised music as Assistant Professor of Ensembles and Brass at Berklee College of Music and as VP of the JazzBoston organization. Jason has also served as an Assistant Professor at Harvard University and at New England Conservatory. He has also served on the faculty at the New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City.

Liederabend LXXXIV: Shades of Romanticism, Part 2

The Liederabend—literally, "evening of song"—dates back to the 1800s, when musicians and lovers of music would gather at someone's home, and one or more singers and a pianist would perform the songs of composers of the day. In the field of classical music, these songs are referred to as "art songs," and the German art songs are called "Lieder." In Germany, the great age of song came in the 19th century. German and Austrian composers had written music for voice with keyboard before this time, but it was with the flowering of German literature in the Classical and Romantic eras that composers found high inspiration in great poetry, sparking the genre known as the "Lied."

The tradition of the art song composition continues today, with composers from all corners of the world setting poetry in many languages, scored for voice and piano. The NEC Liederabend series presents songs in a variety of languages—not only German—dating from the 19th century up to the present day.

Artist(s): American pianist Clayton Stephenson’s love for music is immediately apparent in his joyous charisma onstage, expressive power, and natural ease at the instrument., Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone), he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making., Growing up in New York City, Clayton started piano lessons at age 7, and the next year was accepted into The Julliard School’s Music Advancement Program—a full scholarship program for disadvantaged students—where he lingered to watch student recitals and fell in love with music. Clayton practiced on a synthesizer at home until he found an old upright piano on the street. For the next six years that would be his practice piano, until, at the age of 17, he received a new piano from the Lang Lang Foundation., He credits the generous support of community programs with providing him musical inspiration and resources along the way. As he describes it, the “Third Street Music School jump-started my music education; the Young People’s Choir taught me phrasing and voicing; Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program introduced me to formal and rigorous piano training, which enabled me to get into Juilliard Pre-College; the Morningside Music Bridge validated my talent and elevated my self-confidence; the Boy’s Club of New York exposed me to jazz; and the Lang Lang Foundation brought me to stages worldwide and transformed me from a piano student to a young artist.”, Highlights of his 2025-26 season included a performance of the Brahms Concerto # 2 with the Cincinnati Orchestra, performances of Gershwin’s Concerto in F with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Arts Festival, Festival Internazionale Palermo (Italy), Boston Pops and Sarasota Orchestra. He played the Ravel Concerto in G with the Nashville and Portland (Maine) Symphonies as well as the Stuttgart Philharmonic (Germany). In addition he gave recitals at the Jacobins Festival (Toulouse, France), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Isabella Gardner Museum (Boston) and Crystal Bridges Museum (Arkansas). Clayton finished his season in spring 2026 on tour with the Stuttgart Philharmonic in Italy., Recent seasons have included concerto performances with the Houston, North Carolina, Virginia and Cincinnati Symphonies; festival appearances at Grand Teton, Grant Park, and Tippet Rise; recitals at the Kennedy Center for Washington Performing Arts and the 92nd Street Y in New York City; and gala performances with the New York and Las Vegas Philharmonics. He also served as the 2024-25 Artist-in-Residence at the Hartford Symphony., Clayton Stephenson graduated from the Harvard-New England Conservatory (NEC) dual degree program in spring 2023 with a BA in economics from Harvard and a Masters degree in piano performance from NEC under Wha Kyung Byun. Liederabend LXXXV

The Liederabend—literally, "evening of song"—dates back to the 1800s, when musicians and lovers of music would gather at someone's home, and one or more singers and a pianist would perform the songs of composers of the day. In the field of classical music, these songs are referred to as "art songs," and the German art songs are called "Lieder." In Germany, the great age of song came in the 19th century. German and Austrian composers had written music for voice with keyboard before this time, but it was with the flowering of German literature in the Classical and Romantic eras that composers found high inspiration in great poetry, sparking the genre known as the "Lied."

The tradition of the art song composition continues today, with composers from all corners of the world setting poetry in many languages, scored for voice and piano. The NEC Liederabend series presents songs in a variety of languages—not only German—dating from the 19th century up to the present day.

Artist(s): Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano MaryAnn McCormick has been hailed in the press as “charismatic”, “spell-binding”, and “elegant.”, Her international operatic credits include Isabella in L’italiana in Algeri at La Scala in Milan, Azucena in Il Trovatore at the Teatro Regio di Torino, the title role of Carmen at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Maddalena in Rigoletto under Daniele Gatti at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Gluck’s Alceste under Bruno Bartoletti at the Teatro Regio di Parma, and First Maid in Elektra with Christoph von Dohnanyi at the Opéra National de Paris. Ms. McCormick is also a recipient of the Grammy award for Best Opera Recording (2012) for her participation in Wagner’s Ring Cycle with the Metropolitan Opera in Die Walküre in the role of Grimgerde for the premiere of the Robert LaPage production. Artist(s): Richard Goode has been hailed for music-making of tremendous emotional power, depth, and expressiveness, and has been acknowledged worldwide as one of today’s leading interpreters of Classical and Romantic music. In regular performances with the major orchestras, recitals in the world’s music capitals, master classes in person or online, and through his extensive and acclaimed Nonesuch recordings, he has won a large and devoted following., An exclusive Nonesuch recording artist, Goode has made more than two dozen recordings over the years, ranging from solo and chamber works to lieder and concertos. His 10-CD set of the complete Beethoven sonatas cycle, the first-ever by an American-born pianist, was nominated for a Grammy and has been ranked among the most distinguished recordings of this repertoire. Other recording highlights include numerous Mozart piano concerti with Orpheus and the Beethoven piano concerti with Ivan Fischer and Budapest Festival Orchestra., A native of New York, Richard Goode studied at the Mannes College of Music and the Curtis Institute. Universal Design for Learning: Empowering Students and Transforming Instruction

Music educators often work with hundreds of students per week, and cognitive learning science has determined that we all learn as uniquely as our fingerprints- teaching high-quality and engaging instruction can seem daunting, but Universal Design for Learning (UDL) creates a framework for meeting the needs of all learners!

In this 90-minute interactive workshop, educators will understand the theory of UDL and how it can transform their music instruction. The UDL Guidelines will be explained, and practical applications for implementing UDL in the arts will be shared. Educators will have multiple options for applying UDL to their instruction or classroom setup and will receive access to extensive resources on many UDL subtopics.

She is a dynamic presenter, author, and the K1-8th Grade Visual Art, Special Education, and ESL Teacher at a Boston Public School where her students describe her as kind and strict., She has presented internationally on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) at numerous conferences and professional development workshops and taught graduate-level courses on UDL, most recently as a teaching fellow for the Harvard Graduate School of Education., Liz shares some of her experiences in her book, Art for All: Planning for Variability in the Visual Art Classroom (second edition). Artist(s): Warren Senders is an internationally recognized musician and educator with decades of involvement in the artistic and pedagogical traditions of India as well as those of Western, African and African-American musics., Also trained as a jazz bassist, he founded the pan-cultural ensemble Antigravity in 1981; the group’s two CDs have received raves from music critics all over the world. As a teacher, he is dedicated advocate of experiential “learning-by-doing.”, As part of his work with the Music-in-Education faculty at New England Conservatory of Music, he has developed curriculum initiatives in which music from many cultures is integrated into the pedagodical process in subjects as diverse as poetry, history, and art. An expert on the stimulation and nurturing of individual creativity, Mr. Senders is on the faculty of Music Education at the New England Conservatory of Music, a creativity consultant for Babson College’s MBA program, and a core member of Boston’s Jazz Composers’ Alliance.

Liederabend LXXXVI

The Liederabend — literally, "evening of song" — dates back to the 1800s, when musicians and lovers of music would gather at someone's home, and one or more singers and a pianist would perform the songs of composers of the day. In the field of classical music, these songs are referred to as "art songs," and the German art songs are called "Lieder." In Germany, the great age of song came in the 19th century. German and Austrian composers had written music for voice with keyboard before this time, but it was with the flowering of German literature in the Classical and Romantic eras that composers found high inspiration in great poetry, sparking the genre known as the "Lied."

The tradition of the art song composition continues today, with composers from all corners of the world setting poetry in many languages, scored for voice and piano. The NEC Liederabend series presents songs in a variety of languages — not only German — dating from the 19th century up to the present day.

CMA Department Concert: Sounding Resilience

In tonight’s Contemporary Musical Arts Department production, NEC students and faculty explore how music has inspired movements, united communities, and given voice to struggles for peace, justice, and equality across generations. Rooted in the histories of the Civil Rights, Labor, Suffragist, Anti-war, and Environmental movements in the United States, the program also engages with protest and liberation songs from around the world, including music that has emerged in response to today’s most urgent social issues.

Blending traditional songs, contemporary works, original compositions, and music by artists such as Peggy and Pete Seeger, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Fay Victor, Sam Cooke, Charlie King, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Abbey Lincoln, and Max Roach, performers examine the enduring power of music to build solidarity, sustain resistance, and inspire collective action.

More than a concert, Sounding Resilience is a celebration of the human spirit — a dynamic exploration of how artists transform pain into purpose, protest into harmony, and song into a force for hope, healing, and change.

Beethoven's Ghost Trio, with its legendary, otherworldly slow movement, opens the evening; a new work commissioned for the Trio by Andrew Norman follows; and Shostakovich's Second Piano Trio—one of the most wrenching works in the chamber repertoire—closes it.

NEC Chamber Orchestra

The NEC Chamber Orchestra was created to provide the students with an opportunity to apply the principals of chamber music in a small orchestral setting. The participants are chosen by audition at the beginning of the academic year and remain together throughout. As the ensemble rehearses and performs without a conductor, leadership responsibilities are rotated for every work performed. This affords the students an opportunity to develop communication skills, take responsibility for musical decisions and broaden their aural and score reading capabilities. Participation in the program also allows them to explore a wide range of the incredibly rich chamber orchestra literature.

Donald Palma is the artistic director of the NEC Chamber Orchestra.

Artist(s): Michael Dobrinski joined the New England Conservatory trumpet faculty in the fall of 2018, and began as Chair of Brass and Percussion in 2023. He also spends his summers on faculty at the Brevard Music Center. Michael performs regularly with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops, including performances at Tanglewood, Carnegie Hall, and the 2015 European tour. He also appears on the Boston Symphony recordings of Shostakovich Symphony no. 7, Shostakovich Symphony no. 12, John Williams Violin Concerto, and Strauss An Alpine Symphony., Michael was previously the Principal Trumpet of the Sarasota Orchestra and a member of the Sarasota Brass Quintet. He has also performed with the Naples Philharmonic, Florida Orchestra, New World Symphony for the grand opening of the New World Center in Miami, Florida, and has appeared as guest Principal Trumpet with the Fort Worth Symphony, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and Boston Pops Orchestra.

Under the direction of NEC faculty pianist Pei-Shan Lee, Sonata Night is an evening of piano-instrumental masterworks featuring collaborative pianists in partnership with their instrumental colleagues.

Sonata, a musical term of several meanings, is used here to signify a duo form of equal partnership. Sonata Night programming spans a wide range of musical styles and features the world's greatest duo works from the Baroque through the 20th century, including compositional forms such as multi-movement suites and character pieces.

Sonata Night performers are coached jointly by faculty of the collaborative piano and instrumental departments.

Her workshops and presentations have been featured nationally by groups that support the arts, including Creative Capital, the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, Sundance, Firelight Media, the National Young Arts Foundation, and a variety of state arts councils and commissions., Elaine spent 10 years in academia, teaching at the Columbus College of Art & Design and serving as the Department Head for Business & Entrepreneurship from 2014-2018. She regularly provides guest lectures for colleges, universities, and conservatories that serve the arts, including the Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, the School of Visual Arts, and the Cleveland Institute of Arts. An annual tradition in NEC’s Composition Department, this concert celebrates the life and music of Arthur Berger, an influential composer, critic, and teacher who served on the faculty from 1980-1999. Sid Richardson is curator of tonight's program.

Artist(s): Arthur Berger joined the NEC composition faculty in 1980 after his official “retirement” from teaching, and remained for two decades, well into an “emeritus” status that did not diminish his participation in the musical life of the Conservatory. Berger made his mark on 20th-century music both as a journalist and as a composer. His music reviews appeared in the Boston Transcript in the 1930s, while he was a student at Harvard; he later wrote for the New York Herald Tribune, and founded and edited two publications: The Musical Mercury and Perspectives in New Music. As a composer, Berger shifted from neoclassicism to twelve-tone and other modernist composition techniques; his studies and life kept him close to many of the 20th century’s key figures in the arts, from Stravinsky to Motherwell. Boston Modern Orchestra Project has released a recording on New World of Berger’s complete orchestral works, the product of several years of BMOP’s annual Jordan Hall concerts devoted to NEC composers and performers. Geoffrey Burleson ‘88 M.M. has recorded his complete piano music (Centaur, 2002). Berger’s Reflections of an American Composer was published by University of California Press in 2002.

David T. Little’s JFK centers on John and Jacqueline Kennedy during their final night in Fort Worth, tracing the mix of public pressure and private reflection that defined the moment. The opera moves between memory, conversation, and the looming demands of the next day, offering a close look at two people navigating history as it closes in around them. Little’s score drives the drama with clarity and urgency, shaping a portrait of the Kennedys that is intimate rather than monumental.
