Grandparents Day

Each year on the Sunday following Labor Day, grandchildren across the country honor their grandparents.

There is a special bond that can only be shared between grandchildren and their grandparents. Grandparents are full of hug and kisses, family history, wisdom, patience, love and guidance. National Grandparents Day gives the grandchildren the opportunity to show love and appreciation to their grandparents.

National Grandparents Day has it’s very own song. The National Grandparents Day Council of Chula Vista, California announced in 2004 that “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa” by Johnny Prill would be the official song of the United States National Grandparents’ Day holiday. The Council presented Prill with the National Songwriter’s Award in recognition of his highly popular composition “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa”.

National Grandparents Day is expected to grow in significance over the next decade and beyond as the number of grandparents in the United States rises from 65 million in 2011 to 80 million in 2020 as a result of the baby boom.

NATIONAL GRANDPARENT’S DAY HISTORY

Celebrated in the United States since 1978 The United States Senate and President Jimmy Carter nationally recognized Marian McQuade of Oak Hill, West Virginia as the founder of National Grandparents Day. McQuade made it her goal to educate the youth in the community about the important contributions that seniors have made throughout history. It was also her hope to have the youth “adopt” a grandparent, not just for one day a year, but rather for a lifetime.

In February of 1977, Senator Randolph along with the concurrence of other senators, introduced a joint resolution to the senate requesting the president to “issue annually a proclamation designating the first Sunday of September after Labor Day of each year as ‘National Grandparents Day”. Congress did pass the legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day and on August 3, 1978 President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. The statute cites the day’s purpose: “…to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer”.

There are some people who claim the origin of this holiday resides with the efforts of Hermine Beckett Hanna of North Syracuse, New York, recognizing seniors and their importance as early as 1961. New York Congressman James T. Walsh recognized her efforts on February 21, 1990, in front of the United States House of Representatives, thanking Hermine Beckett Hanna “for her important role in the establishment of Grandparents Day”.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day was established by an Act of Congress with the passage of Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act. This day is one of the six days that Federal Law requires the POW/MIA Flag be flown at all places designated by the U.S. Secretary of Defense.

The Commission is comprised of 7 Commissioners appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council to 5 year terms. The Commissioners are all from diverse backgrounds and geographic areas of the City of Los Angeles.

The Commission holds regular public meetings the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Monday of each month and may also hold special meetings to conduct business.

The Commission ensures that the City Charter and the Neighborhood Council Plan are realized by setting policies with the aim of making Neighborhood Councils diverse, inclusive, and representative of all community stakeholders. The Commission believes strongly that the individuality of Neighborhood Councils should function as a catalyst for change in addressing the needs of their communities. By increasing access to City government and City services through the network of local Neighborhood Councils, the Commission strives to increase quality of life for everyone living in Los Angeles.

Since launching in April, Shine LA has brought together more than 2,000 Angelenos for a day of service in more than 30 neighborhoods across Los Angeles. Volunteers have participated in activities such as tree planting, utility box painting, loose litter pick-up to educational programming on composting.

Shine LA is every fourth Saturday of the month in neighborhoods across Los Angeles.

National VFW Day

National VFW Day is celebrated annually on September 29. This day is devoted to the VFW organization and it’s members who have served our nation.

The VFW was established on September 29, 1899 by a group of veterans from the Spanish-American war. It has since grown to be the nation’s largest group of combat veterans. They continue “to honor the dead by helping the living.” The VFW promote patriotism, good will and youth scholarships. They also provide military assistance and community service programs, promote youth activities and volunteer many hours in their local communities.

How do you celebrate today? Honor the VFW members and veterans in your community. Let them know that you appreciate the sacrifices they have made for all of us. We truly are the land of the free because of the brave.

Every year, millions of people recognize the third Thursday of October as International Shakeout Day, a time specifically geared toward earthquake preparedness. Activities normally include conducting drills and exercises, and at a minimum, practicing the earthquake safety steps ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’ as if experiencing a major earthquake.

What is the ShakeOut drill?
The Great ShakeOut earthquake drills are based on scenario earthquakes that could affect the area if they were to actually take place. Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills are an annual opportunity for people in homes, schools, and organizations to practice what to do during earthquakes, and to improve preparedness.

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I (major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect). The United States also originally observed Armistice Day; it then evolved into the current Veterans Day holiday in 1954.

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving.

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”

The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926, requesting that President Calvin Coolidge issue another proclamation to observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies. A Congressional Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday: “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day’.”

In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama, had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Weeks led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of National Veterans Day. Weeks led the first national celebration in 1947 in Alabama and annually until his death in 1985. President Reagan honored Weeks at the White House with the Presidential Citizenship Medal in 1982 as the driving force for the national holiday. Elizabeth Dole, who prepared the briefing for President Reagan, determined Weeks as the “Father of Veterans Day.”

U.S. Representative Ed Rees from Emporia, Kansas, presented a bill establishing the holiday through Congress. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954.

Congress amended this act on June 1, 1954, replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans,” and it has been known as Veterans Day since.

The National Veterans Award, created in 1954, also started in Birmingham. Congressman Rees of Kansas was honored in Alabama as the first recipient of the award for his support offering legislation to make Veterans Day a federal holiday, which marked nine years of effort by Raymond Weeks. Weeks conceived the idea in 1945, petitioned Gen. Eisenhower in 1946, and led the first Veterans Day celebration in 1947 (keeping the official name Armistice Day until Veterans Day was legal in 1954).

Although originally scheduled for celebration on November 11 of every year, starting in 1971 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. In 1978, it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11. While the legal holiday remains on November 11, if that date happens to be on a Saturday or Sunday, then organizations that formally observe the holiday will normally be closed on the adjacent Friday or Monday, respectively.

Observance
Because it is a federal holiday, some American workers and many students have Veterans Day off from work or school. When Veterans Day falls on a Saturday then either Saturday or the preceding Friday may be designated as the holiday, whereas if it falls on a Sunday it is typically observed on the following Monday. A Society for Human Resource Management poll in 2010 found that 21 percent of employers planned to observe the holiday in 2011.

Non-essential federal government offices are closed. No mail is delivered. All federal workers are paid for the holiday; those who are required to work on the holiday sometimes receive holiday pay for that day in addition to their wages.

In his Armistice Day address to Congress, Wilson was sensitive to the psychological toll of the lean War years: “Hunger does not breed reform; it breeds madness,” he remarked. As Veterans Day and the birthday of the United States Marine Corps (November 10, 1775) are only one day apart, that branch of the Armed Forces customarily observes both occasions as a 96-hour liberty period.

The Annual CSUN Powwow will take place The Saturday after Thanksgiving to celebrate American Indian communities of Los Angeles and throughout Southern California. The powwow is scheduled to take place from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Sierra Quad, located in the center of campus at 18111 Nordhoff Street in Northridge.

“More than 250,000 American Indians live in Los Angeles County,” said Scott Andrews, who is a professor in the CSUN American Indian Studies Program and the Department of English. “That population is spread across a large geographic area, and powwows are one way members of that community stay in touch with each other. “Powwow music and dance styles reflect mostly the cultural traditions of Southern and Northern Plains tribes, but they have evolved to include Native traditions from their local areas,” Andrews said.

“For instance, members of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians will open our event with songs in their distinct Southern California style and language.”

The CSUN campus is located in the unceded territory of Sesevenga, a village that was located near Porter Ranch. The Sesevitam were its occupants, and are ancestors to the Tataviam, with whom CSUN partners in educational and community programs.

The powwow will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a gourd dance, which is a ceremonial dance that honors veterans. That will be followed at 12:30 p.m. by the Grand Entry, which includes a procession of all the day’s dancers in traditional regalia, opening blessings, greetings, and songs.

The event will feature Indigenous music and dance, arts and crafts vendors, children’s activities, and food, such as frybread. Vendors will be selling clothes, jewelry, and souvenirs.

The powwow is hosted by the American Indian Studies Program and the American Indian Student Association. Its co-sponsors include the Associated Students, the University Student Union, University Parking Services, the College of Humanities Dean’s Office, the college’s Academic Programming Fund, and the Educational Opportunity Program.

The powwow is open to the public, and admission is free. On the day of the event, parking is free of charge in the B3 Parking Structure, which is the parking closest to the powwow arena. Enter campus from Reseda Boulevard onto Prairie Street. Follow Prairie onto campus and turn right into the parking structure.. Regular parking fees apply in other lots. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day encourages people to look for ways to reduce energy costs, and save on their energy bills.

It is often in the little things that you do that can save you big money on your energy bill, such as:

Weatherproof your home
Replace old windows with new energy-efficient windows
Replace old furnace with new energy-efficient furnace
Properly maintain furnace
Use solar heat if possible
Turn down thermostats
Turning off lights when leaving a room
Use energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs
Run dishwasher and washing machine only when fully loaded
Lower water heater temperature
Take shorter showers
Unplug unused appliances
Carpool whenever possible

The Board of Neighborhood Commissioners (The Commission) was established by the City Charter in 1999 as a policy-setting and oversight commission for the Neighborhood Councils and the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment.

The Commission is comprised of 7 Commissioners appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council to 5 year terms. The Commissioners are all from diverse backgrounds and geographic areas of the City of Los Angeles.

The Commission holds regular public meetings the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Monday of each month and may also hold special meetings to conduct business.

The Commission ensures that the City Charter and the Neighborhood Council Plan are realized by setting policies with the aim of making Neighborhood Councils diverse, inclusive, and representative of all community stakeholders. The Commission believes strongly that the individuality of Neighborhood Councils should function as a catalyst for change in addressing the needs of their communities. By increasing access to City government and City services through the network of local Neighborhood Councils, the Commission strives to increase quality of life for everyone living in Los Angeles.

Created by Mayor Bass, Shine LA is a movement that strengthens communities by bringing Angelenos together from across the city to beautify LA neighborhoods. With major global events just around the corner – the 2026 FIFA World Cup, 2027 Superbowl and 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games – Shine LA inspires Angelenos to take pride in preparing their communities to step onto the world stage.

Since launching in April, Shine LA has brought together more than 2,000 Angelenos for a day of service in more than 30 neighborhoods across Los Angeles. Volunteers have participated in activities such as tree planting, utility box painting, loose litter pick-up to educational programming on composting.

Shine LA is every fourth Saturday of the month in neighborhoods across Los Angeles.
