Celebrating natural environments in urban areas Inhabited: Anthromes of Queensland is a gentle reminder of the importance of unseen ecosystems and that human interaction changes environments. Queensland-based environmental photographer LeAnne Vincent’s immersive artwork combines cyanotype photograms, digital photography, hi-vis work shirts and field recordings.

Featuring Queensland artists and designers, Wildflowering by Design celebrates our botanical heritage through a design lens, exploring materiality, handcrafting and the digital realm.

Book of the month: The First Friend

A chilling black comedy from author Malcolm Knox, The First Friend imagines a gangster mob in charge of a global superpower.

The Soviet Union 1938: Lavrentiy Beria, 'The Boss' of the Georgian republic, nervously prepares a Black Sea resort for a visit from 'The Boss of Bosses', his fellow Georgian Josef Stalin. Under escalating pressure from enemies and allies alike, Beria slowly but surely descends into murderous paranoia.

By his side is Vasil Murtov, Beria's closest friend since childhood. But to be a witness is dangerous; Murtov must protect his family and play his own game of survival while remaining outwardly loyal to an increasingly unstable Beria. The tension ramps up as Stalin's visit and the inevitable bloodbath approaches. Is Murtov playing Beria, or is he being played?

The First Friend is a historical novel in a time of autocrats, where reality is a fiction created by those who rule. Reflecting on Putin's Russia, Trump's America, Xi's China and Murdoch's planet Earth, it is at once a satire and a thriller, a survivor's tale in which a father has to walk a tightrope every day to save his family from a monster and a monstrous society. Where safety lies in following official fictions, is a truthful life the ultimate risk?

This eclectic exhibition of beautifully hand-crafted artworks is on display in the Dunn Wing Art Gallery at Redlands Coast Museum, from 30 April to 6 June 2025.

Fifteen members of the Queensland Branch of ATASDA (Australian Textile Art and Surface Design Association) have used a wide variety of mediums, techniques and styles to interpret the theme, and weave their personal narratives into their works. Embroidery, collage, upcycling, felting, patchwork, mixed media, surface design, stitching, lettering, stencilling, fabric manipulation and much more create a vibrant and cohesive display, showing that textile art has now become an exciting artform in its own right, and no longer merely serves a functional purpose as in the past. You will be intrigued and inspired by this stimulating, thought-provoking exhibition.

Featured artists, as ATASDA members and as individual artists, have exhibited locally across Australia and internationally.
