IMCI Brown Bag Lunch: Angela Crawford - Mathematical Reasoning Through Movement

How do students communicate mathematical reasoning they can't yet put into words?

Join the conversation as Angela Crawford, an assistant research professor of STEM Education, investigates behavioral signals, such as gesture and student-generated inscriptions, of proportional reasoning sophistication in middle school students in “Detecting Mathematical Reasoning Through Gesture and Movement: Toward a Multimodal Assessment Platform.” The long-term goal is a technology-mediated assessment platform capable of automatically detecting reasoning quality through multimodal behavior — moving beyond written products to capture thinking in motion.

Wellner Lecture - Carl Bergstrom (University of Washington) - Mathematical models illuminate the impediments to research

The annual Jon A. Wellner Lecture hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistical Science will feature Carl Bergstrom, professor of biology at University of Washington, who will discuss how mathematical models can be used to analyze high-risk, high-reward research. The lecture is 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 13, in TLC 028 and online (Passcode: 04132026). Refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m. in the IRIC Atrium following the talk. The annual lecture honors the legacy of Professor Wellner and highlights advances in mathematics and statistics while providing learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
