Woven in Wool: Resilience in Coast Salish Weaving

Embrace the power of wool weaving in all its forms. Centuries-old Coast Salish weaving traditions are a core part of ceremony and celebration, yet remain under-appreciated by the public.

Woven in Wool features both historical Salish wool weavings and new creations by contemporary weavers, including robes, vests, tunics, tumplines, and skirts, as well as weaving tools and materials. Firstperson voices from the Salish weaving communities will contextualize their own history and artistic traditions, leading visitors through the process of weaving and a seasonal story of creation: gathering, processing & spinning, dyeing, and weaving.

This exhibit is a collaboration between the Coast Salish Wool Weaving Center (CSWWC) co-curators and members of the Burke’s staff. Together, they will examine the creation of woven artworks and the extensive cultural and scientific knowledge embedded in woven textiles, which connect generations and reflect relationships with the world around us.

2026 Neddy Artist Awards Exhibition: Agents of Change

The 2026 Neddy Artist Awards presents Agents of Change, an exhibition curated by Ellen Ito that will be hosted in the Behnke Family Gallery and features all eight of this year’s program finalists.

Through their individual explorations of unfixed narratives, these eight artists actively position their practices and themselves as agents of change. They initiate transformation by challenging the status quo, each fostering innovative ways of thinking, operating, seeing, and feeling.

Estado Novo

Wednesday, Oct. 7 – Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026

Amid the global resurgence of religious nationalism, the exhibition critically revisits Portugal’s Catholicism-based dictatorial regime, Estado Novo (1933–1974), through a contemporary lens. Curated by Nikoloz Nadirashvili (PhD Candidate, Art History), the show features Gabriel Siams (Brazil/Portugal), Paulo Mendes (Portugal), Daniel Padrino (Venezuela/Portugal), and Aura (Portugal), whose multimedia works unsettle conventional notions of spirituality, family, work ethic, homeland, and, ultimately, authority.

The project is supported by a grant from 4Culture.
