Some questions on critical-spatial practice and a few case studies Description This talk examines a series of "transgressive" or non-comissioned projects that have taken place in non-institutional alternative spaces, including actions by the collective Asco in Los Angeles around 1973; a group show curated by Ana Mendieta at A.I.R. Gallery, New York in 1980; a museum exhibition restaged at Friesenwall 120 in 1994; and a recent project by Ed Lehan and Lena Tutunjian at Penarth Centre, London in 2016. Speaker Kari Rittenbach is a critic and independent curator based in Brooklyn, New York. She is a graduate of Yale University, the Courtauld Institute of Art, and the Whitney Independent Study Program. Her writing has appeared in Artforum, Frieze, Flash Art, May Revue, Texte zur Kunst, and in artist books and catalogues. She has organized exhibitions and events at Yale Union (Portland, OR), The Kitchen (New York), The Whitney Museum (New York), Sculpture Center (New York), Artists Space (New York), Barbican Art Gallery (London), and other venues in Los Angeles, New York, London, Berlin and Vienna. |
