Description | As part of the exhibition Untold Passage curated by Emily Zimmerman, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery will host an open-forum discussion with artist Dan Paz that uses the performative form of the studio visit to share the artist’s research done in South Florida, which put forward rarely discussed histories of immigration. During the studio-visit, Paz will present their project in anticipation of and exhibition, Monument a Surface, at Ditch Projects, in Oregon (January 2018). Paz welcomes a discursive atmosphere where questions are encouraged and attendees can have a first-hand experience with the work. Through the lens of fidelity, Paz will share photography, installation, and sculptural documentation exploring sites of remembrance in the project Monument a Surface. An arrangement of research and visual representations of Paz's residency at The Studios of Key West in Florida, the exhibition explores the act of memorializing and monument-making among divergent histories in southern Florida. In particular, the exhibition reads three affective sites together, The AIDS Memorial, the African Cemetery, and the Pulse Nightclub shooting. This project specifically looks at gestures that are meant to honor experiences of loss in an effort to restore, question, and be in the process of grief. Untold Passage at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, University of Washington, runs until August 18, with works by Zhi Lin, Mary Ann Peters, Stacey Tran, Rodrigo Valenzuela, Ocean Vuong, Becky Win, X Y X, and Javier Zamora. |
