Description | Title A Life in Curatorial — Some Observations Description Since Chiyo Ishikawa began working at the Seattle Art Museum almost 30 years ago, there have been many changes in the curatorial profession and within the museum. In this informal presentation, Ishikawa will give some examples of her work then and now as well as discuss a current exhibition project. Speaker Chiyo Ishikawa is Susan Brotman Deputy Director for Art and Curator of European Painting & Sculpture at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM). She is Affiliate Professor of Art History at the University of Washington. In 2018, Ishikawa was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French Minister of Culture. In 2004, she was awarded the Order of Isabel la Católica by His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain for co-curating Spain in the Age of Exploration 1492-1819. More recently, she has presented or co-organized exhibitions, including Impressionism: Paintings Collected by European Museums; Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris; Gauguin & Polynesia: An Elusive Paradise; and Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style. Prior to joining SAM in 1990, Ishikawa worked at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She received her PhD in Art History from Bryn Mawr College. |
