Title Virtue and Fortune: The Triumph of a Christian Prince and the Rise of the Modern Artist in Bentivoglio Bologna Description In 1490, the painter Lorenzo Costa completed two striking canvases for the princely chapel of the Bentivoglio family, the de facto rulers of the Italian city of Bologna, which depict the Triumph of Fame and the Triumph of Death. These two images conflate religious imagery with elements drawn from vernacular poetry, ancient history, and moral philosophy, disrupting our expectations about church decorations in fifteenth-century Italy and resisting traditional categories of artistic genres and spaces. This talk will be an overview of my dissertation project, which takes Costa’s Triumphs as a point of departure to rethink our current understanding of the Renaissance engagement with the ancient past, the relation between word and image in the early modern period, and the role of artists in Renaissance courts.
