Description | UW Zoom meeting ID: 994 2700 5601 Title Nel Cuore di Tufo: Landscape, Stone, and Regional Identity in Sixteenth-Century TusciaDescription This presentation is a workshop of a job talk and presents doctoral research concerning three sixteenth-century gardens in the hill country north of Rome. While these gardens — Villa Farnese in Caprarola, Villa Lante in Bagnaia, and the Sacro Bosco in Bomarzo — are well known to historians of Renaissance art and landscape architecture alike, this presentation seeks to reframe the sites within a context of vernacular architecture, regional identity, and materiality. At the heart of this discussion is tufo, a relatively plain and humble volcanic stone that is utilized throughout Tuscia; foregrounded within these gardens, tufo makes the case for a new understanding of the Renaissance's relationship with Italy's Etruscan past. Speaker Kit Coty is a PhD Candidate in the Division of Art History. This lecture is part of the Division of Art History Colloquia Series. |
