Description | Garriy Shteynberg, PhD Assistant Professor, University of Tennessee Department of Psychology Shared Attention: Conceptual Foundations and Empirical Evidence Dr. Shteynberg will review his work on shared attention, instances in which one’s personal perspective is also another’s. He describes the psychological state of shared attention as the activation of a perspective that is irreducibly collective—a perspective in which the world is experienced from ‘our attention’. He focuses on the conceptual logic behind shared attention, as well as the empirical work detailing its affective, motivational, and behavioral consequences. Highlighting findings that point to the relevance of shared attention to pragmatically important challenges, Dr. Shteynberg will discuss the role of shared attention in the extremetizing effects of social media consumption. Finally, he addresses the relevance of shared attention to the emergence of human culture.
