Description | Uniting Voices: Mental Health Conference is the only event of its kind at UW, so we are working closely with collaborators in the mental health community, including professionals, researchers, activists and survivors, to curate a conference that demonstrates the practical, human, and well-researched multidisciplinary scope of mental health advocacy. The speakers should be from different financial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and be able to articulate the social and institutional systems and cognitive patterns in place that reinforce harmful discriminatory treatment of people with mental health problems. In doing so, we hope to educate the public, share stories, and connect--bring people closer together--in a safe, supportive learning environment. Our hope for the long run is to develop an effective format that brings together many different mental health entities to destigmatize mental health from an intersectional framework and alter the system on campus to more appropriately and empathetically serve students affected by mental health illness, stigma and institutions. |
