Location: Savery Hall 264 Title: Dogmatism and Parochialism Edouard Machery Distinguished Professor Director of the Center for Philosophy of Science Department of History and Philosophy of Science University of Pittsburgh In this talk (based on chapter 4 of my 2017 book Philosophy Within Its Proper Bounds), I describe the method of cases—a prominent method in much of philosophy—and I present two arguments based on experimental-philosophy findings that undermine its use in philosophy. Edouard Machery is Distinguished Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh and the Director of the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on the philosophical issues raised by psychology and cognitive neuroscience. He is also involved in the development of experimental philosophy, having published many noted articles in this field. He is the author of Doing without Concepts (OUP, 2009) and of Philosophy Within Its Proper Bounds (OUP, 2017). |
