This class will introduce you to common foliar pests and diseases often seen in spring in the Pacific Northwest, including rusts, mildews, anthracnose, bacterial blights, tent caterpillars, mites, lacebugs, root weevils, and aphids. Plant Health Care (PHC) approaches to management, including acceptable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods will be covered. The course will include field diagnosis practice, as well as an indoor lab session for everyone to practice their diagnostic skills, so bring in samples of plant problems to work with.

This series will introduce you to plant diseases and insect pests of the Pacific Northwest when they are at their peak or most easily detected. We will look at some common and familiar species as well as some new and unusual pests you need to know. Plant specimen samples will be reviewed indoors in addition to diagnosing pest problems in the field. Least toxic and most sustainable pest management methods will be emphasized. Great diagnostic resources will be discussed and utilized. Students are encouraged to bring pest and disease samples to class for discussion and diagnosis.

Instructor Bess Bronstein is an ISA Certified Arborist, Qualified Tree Risk Assessor and horticultural consultant based on the Kitsap Peninsula in Kingston, Washington, with 30 years experience in arboriculture, landscape management and garden design. She was an instructor for the Edmonds Community College horticulture program for 28 years, with a focus on courses in pruning and tree care, plant identification, plant pests and diagnosis, and soils. Bess was an Education Coordinator for the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (PNW-ISA) for 10 years, and frequently teaches public and professional arboriculture and horticulture courses throughout the Puget Sound. She is a lifetime member of Plant Amnesty, and supports ongoing education in sustainable landscape management practices and tree care.
