This session will focus on fungal decay diseases, prevalent in the damp fall season, that affect many of our native tree species in the Pacific Northwest. Recognizing these pathogens is essential when assessing tree health and structure. We will examine samples in the classroom and scout for examples in the field. Plant Health Care (PHC) approaches to management, including acceptable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods will be covered. We will also do diagnosis practice in the lab. If some of your plant problem samples have you stymied, let’s figure out what’s wrong with your plant!

This series will introduce you to plant diseases and insect pests of the Pacific Northwest when they are at their peak or most easily detected. We will look at some common and familiar species as well as some new and unusual pests you need to know. Plant specimen samples will be reviewed indoors in addition to diagnosing pest problems in the field. Least toxic and most sustainable pest management methods will be emphasized. Great diagnostic resources will be discussed and utilized. Students are encouraged to bring pest and disease samples to class for discussion and diagnosis.

Instructor Bess Bronstein is an ISA Certified Arborist, Qualified Tree Risk Assessor and horticultural consultant based on the Kitsap Peninsula in Kingston, Washington, with 30 years experience in arboriculture, landscape management and garden design. She was an instructor for the Edmonds Community College horticulture program for 28 years, with a focus on courses in pruning and tree care, plant identification, plant pests and diagnosis, and soils. Bess was an Education Coordinator for the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (PNW-ISA) for 10 years, and frequently teaches public and professional arboriculture and horticulture courses throughout the Puget Sound. She is a lifetime member of Plant Amnesty, and supports ongoing education in sustainable landscape management practices and tree care.
