Congratulations to the 2019 inventor of the year Jim Stout, M.D.
Jim Stout, M.D. created and leads the Interactive Medical Training Resources (iMTR) group within the Children's Health Institute at University of Washington. He is also Director of the Asthma Clinic at the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic. With collaborators, Dr. Stout and iMTR develop, evaluate, and disseminate online resources for remote training and feedback, with a current focus on implementing diagnostic spirometry in primary care. He also is a co-founder of the National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality (NICHQ), a non-profit organization headquartered in Boston. He works on local, national, and international projects with the common aim of improving the quality of health care.
Dr. Stout recognized the need for improved training and set about to create computer- based instruction to improve the administration of the tests and the quality and accuracy of results. Initially produced on an interactive CD-ROM, the training was licensed for distribution to healthcare providers in the US. The CD was also translated into Dutch and made part of required training for family doctors in the Netherlands. Subsequently re-developed as a web-based suite of five separate training programs, the Spirometry 360® resources have been licensed to individual healthcare practices, hospital systems, US state and also to international healthcare services and brought over $2M in licensing revenue into UW. In addition to the direct licensing revenue, the Spirometry 360 training programs have resulted in UW research opportunities funded by NIH, CDC, AHRQ, IDRC, and EU Commission.
