Description | Speaker: Aliza Monroe-Wise, MSc, MD Title: Closing the gaps for people who inject drugs in Kenya: improving testing, linkage to care and treatment of HIV and viral hepatitis Dr. Aliza Monroe-Wise is an acting Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington, and a Lecturer in the Department of Medicine at Aga Khan University Hospital. She has worked on HIV-prevention studies throughout Africa, Asia and South America for over 20 years, including research on adolescent risk-taking behavior in South Africa, married men’s sexual behavior in India, and pre-exposure prophylaxis among men who have sex with men in Brazil. For the past 10 years, she has worked primarily in Kenya, where she established an educational exchange program for clinical residents at a hospital in Naivasha from 2012-2013, led the conversion of Kenya’s National HIV Integrated Training Curriculum to an e-Learning format from 2016-2019, conducted research on HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) risk among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Nairobi from 2016-2018, and currently leads several studies investigating assisted partner services and HCV testing and treatment among PWID throughout the country. Dr. Monroe-Wise is double-board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases, and holds a masters degree in epidemiology. |
