This event will take place virtually, via Zoom. Title: Wellbeing, Disability, and the Value of Health Elizabeth Barnes Professor Corcoran Department of Philosophy University of Virginia Abstract: It’s commonly assumed in philosophical and economic literature on health and healthcare that the value of health is its contribution to wellbeing. I argue that the complex relationship between disability and wellbeing gives us reason to question this assumption. Disabled people typically have poorer health than non-disabled people, and yet often self-report high levels of wellbeing. Unpacking this complicated relationship between disability, health, and wellbeing gives us reasons to think that the value of health is more complicated than its direct correlation with or contribution to wellbeing. |
