Description | Title: The convergence of evolving science priorities and emerging technologies. Abstract: Over the course of the next decade, top-level planetary mission objectives will pivot towards the in situ chemical analysis and ice- and silicate-rich bodies in order to augment our understanding of: i) prospects for habitability and biosignature preservation potential of cryogenic planetary environments; ii) the diversity of organic matter and identification of alien biological systems (if present); and, iii) i) fundamental planetary geology, informing on processes such as protracted accretion, internal differentiation, and interior dynamics. In particular, the evolving priorities of the scientific community and the current White House Administration have put renewed focus on the search for biosignatures on potentially viable ocean worlds, and the exploration/exploitation of the lunar surface, respectively. In order to meet demanding science objectives within the limited resources of these long- and near-term mission opportunities, the development of advanced technologies needs to be accelerated. Here, I will introduce the analytical promise, instrument designs, and development pathways for a (1) laser-enabled Orbitrap mass analyzer and (2) plasma mass spectrometer that will enable the comprehensive characterization of planetary materials derived from Europa and the Moon.
