This talk draws from critical pedagogy and critical linguistics in an analysis of the historical treatment of linguistic variation in world language education and its role in reproducing social hierarchies and inequality. This is followed by the presentation of an alternative model: an anti-racist. social justice-oriented pedagogy designed to promote students’ critical translingual competence. About Jennifer Leeman Jennifer Leeman is a Professor of Spanish at George Mason University. Her research focuses on the sociopolitics of language, with particular attention to multilingualism, Spanish in the US, and the teaching of Spanish as a heritage language.
