Interdisciplinary Visual Arts Assistant Professor Whitney Lynn gives a lecture titled "Ambiguous Figures."Whitney Lynn mines artifacts from art history and popular culture to reframe narratives of familiar objects, images, and events. Utilizing expanded forms of sculpture, photography, drawing and performance, her work amplifies and subverts embedded meanings, seeking to destabilize what is seemingly inherent. Recent projects include Sirens, Silencers, Mufflers and Mutes (2019), a solo exhibition of Jacquard tapestries tracing the transformation of the mythological Siren; The Scream (2019), a body of work created while an Artist-in-Residence at the Internet Archive; and Forbidden Illusions (2020) a suite of anaglyph prints exploring artists’ depictions of forbidden knowledge. She is currently developing a project in collaboration with the Office of Arts and Culture and Seattle Public utilities that will be installed in late 2020 alongside the Burke-Gilman trail. Born on Williams Air Force Base, Lynn attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, received a BFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University, and an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). She has held faculty appointments at Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and SFAI. |
