Description | Defensive reading in the COVID era. Associate Professor Jevin West of the UW’s Center for an Informed Public will look at online practices that target older adults or put them at risk. New platforms for human interaction and information sharing have opened the door to misinformation, disinformation and other forms of networked manipulation, which diminish trust in democratic institutions such as science and journalism. West will help us spot selection bias and muddled data visualization, distinguish between correlation and causation, and combat modern misinformation in a lively session full of examples drawn from today’s news.
