Description | April Mohanty, PhD University of Utah, School of Medicine There are many advantages and opportunities in leveraging large electronic health record or claims data for generating research evidence and developing interventions within a healthcare system. However, special considerations need to be made to strengthen the validity of research findings. I will present several of our studies, primary based on the Veterans Health Administration data, to explore some of the challenges, methods, and opportunities in utilizing electronic health record data for research. I am an epidemiologist and health services researcher at the Salt Lake City Veterans Health Administration with interests in improving cardiovascular healthcare quality and equity. My goals are to reduce health disparities in cardiovascular disease prevention, management, and related outcomes. My experience includes utilizing electronic health record data to identify healthcare gaps, using and validating methods in biomedical informatics, such as natural language processing, to capture unstructured exposure/outcome data in patient narratives, and clinical decision support tool development to address healthcare gaps. This event will be held online via Zoom, registration is required to receive the Zoom link. |
