Description | Dr. Fang Yin Lo leads a team of bioinformatics scientists at TwinStrand Biosciences, a DNA sequencing company in Seattle that uses a combination of biochemistry and informatics to reduce sequencing error rates from 1-in-100 to 1-in-10 million. She has a background in engineering, molecular biology, systems biology and bioinformatics. At TwinStrand, she leads the design, development and maintenance of tertiary DNA sequencing analysis pipelines and analytical projects with multiple industry and academic partners. Dr. Lo earned her bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, and her PhD in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Washington in Seattle, with a focus in systems biology at the Institute for Systems Biology. Her career journey has evolved in a non-traditional way, with each new role having a different direction and focus. She researched transcriptional regulatory network in an archaeal organism during her graduate study at UW, worked in the wet lab generating data and also on the informatics side analyzing it. After getting her PhD, she transitioned to a pure informatics role, working in malaria research at the Center for Global Infectious Disease Research as a bioinformatics scientist for a year before transitioning to industry. She is passionate about using technology to improve human health and loves working at the intersection of engineering, data science and biology.
