| | Description | Presenters: Dr. Leah Spence & Dr. Patricia Zagallo This workshop will briefly review the data supporting Growth Mindset theory. We will then lead hands-on activities to enact Growth Mindset interventions. Participants will examine their own practices in terms of their adherence to or departure from Growth Mindset. We will also explore ways to move away from deficit-based models towards asset-based models. Participants will leave with resources to continue practicing Growth Mindset. In her current position at the UW Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity working as the Writing Instructor for the UW TRIO-SSS Program, Dr. Leah Spence encourages TRIO program participants to grow their writing skills while embracing their own stories. Her work prioritizes anti-racist pedagogies that help TRIO students navigate the university’s systems of power and find belonging on campus. Dr. Patricia Zagallo is the STEM Instructor for the TRIO Student Support Services program at the UW’s Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, where she provides resources to low-income, first-generation college students to support their academic success and retention in STEM. She is passionate about promoting science education and increasing diversity in STEM through evidence-based approaches. |
