Description | An Academic Career in STEM Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Dr. Charla Lambert is a population geneticist, alum of the University of Washington Genome Sciences Department, and inaugural Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Officer at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. As a DEI Officer, she advocates for and implements changes in institutional policies, processes, programs, and structures to help make research environments more equitable, inclusive, and welcoming to all. Although DEI is an established career option within academia, Dr. Lambert came into the position non-linearly through a variety of experiences in teaching, educational programming, and nonprofit leadership. In this seminar she’ll talk about her career path, skills from her PhD training that set the stage well for it, and what all scientists can do to help advance DEI within their departments and institutions. This virtual seminar series is only possible because of generous support from the UW Departments of: Biochemistry, Biological Structure, Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Microbiology, and Physiology and Biophysics.
