Objectives:

1. Define and differentiate the concepts of machine learning (ML) and augmented intelligence (AI)
2. Predict how ML and AI may be used in the future practice of anatomic pathology
3. Understand some of the challenges (technical, regulatory, economic, ethical) to deploying machine learning and augmented intelligence in anatomic pathology

I frequently conduct informal discussions with our residents as to how and why they came to the specialty of pathology, and a frequent comment that I hear is that current medical students are concerned about the long-term viability of the field given the seeming threat posed by advances in information technology.  While the recent years have seen developments in machine learning that were would have been inconceivable even a decade ago, I believe that the specialty of pathology will not only survive, but thrive.  In my talk, I will use my experiences with an early implementation of machine learning and augmented reality as a gateway into a discussion of how clinical practice, research and regulation is likely to change, and what is likely to remain the same.
