Description | Managing variable renewable resources in the smart grid This presentation will give an overview of the existing challenges to integrate variable renewable resources within the electric power grid. An overview regarding how variable renewable resources affect ancillary services within the power grid will be given. The presentation will then discuss the recent push to transition from deterministic to stochastic programming to handle the uncertainty caused by variable renewable resources. Such stochastic programs for the large-scale mixed integer program, unit commitment, do not scale well. Progressive hedging, however, is a dual decomposition algorithm that has a trivially parallelizable structure that lends itself to high performance computing. Results will be presented based on the use of this algorithm and the talk will conclude with an overview of other smart grid advances that are being developed in order to facilitate the integration of variable renewable resources.
