Description | Improvement of Healthcare Quality and Safety using Human Factors and Ergonomics Bernadette McCrory, PhD, MPH, PE, CHFP Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Montana State University in Bozeman, MT ABSTRACT: The seminar will discuss a variety of projects using human factors and ergonomics, biomechanical, physiological, and neurocognitive research to protect the health and safety of healthcare workers while promoting the independence and quality of life of patients. Studies included are the assessment of single-site laparoscopic surgical instruments and procedures, development and testing of novel pediatric gait rehabilitation machine, crossover comparison of intraoral and cuffed bag valve mask ventilation by emergency medical responders, and analysis of work injuries among therapists in physical rehabilitation. Dr. McCrory will also touch on current efforts in her department to equip our engineers with the skills to transition into practice with a broad view of the engineering profession and their impacts in society. SPEAKER BIO: Dr. McCrory is an Assistant Professor at Montana State University in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department. She held faculty appointments at Concordia University-Nebraska, Nebraska Methodist College, and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Madonna Rehabilitation Center Research Institute. She completed both her MS in Industrial and Management Systems Engineering and a PhD in Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She also completed a BS in Biomedical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and a MPH in Biostatistics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She has been a public health officer for the Army National Guard for 14 years and deployed to Iraq to facilitate preventive medicine at detainee centers. Her ongoing academic research focuses on improving healthcare quality and safety by assessing and developing intuitive medical equipment, instrumentation and systems. She is also exploring engineering education with respect to ethics, social responsibility and service-based learning. She teaches a variety of courses concentrating on statistics, healthcare engineering, and human factors engineering. |
