Description | UW Mechanical Engineering looks forward to welcoming Dr. José A. Gutierrez, Senior Director of Hardware Systems Integration at Microsoft, as our ME Chair's Distinguished Industry Lecture this autumn. About the lecture: Creativity is about creating new ideas while invention is about implementing them. When one takes our inventions and turn them into commercial products or services, we have generated an innovation. When the forces of creativity discover a new emerging paradigm, conflict with existing ones can force interesting dynamics in the innovation landscape. This seminar will discuss several successful and failed innovation stories, emerging technologies, market megatrends and leadership topics to inspire emerging engineers to excel in architecting novel futures for our society. About the speaker: Dr. José A. Gutiérrez was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He received his B.S. degree in electronics engineering from the Universidad Simon Bolivar, Caracas, Venezuela in 1991; his M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in 2001; and his Ph.D. degree in Engineering Sciences from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in 2005, focused in automatic control and robotics vision with a minor in business and corporate finances. Dr. Gutierrez is a multidisciplinary leader in various technology fields spanning energy, telecommunications, biomedicine, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics and digital. Dr. Gutierrez brings leadership to drive innovation and growth aligned to corporate strategy. He has led large-scale development and deployments of IoT / digital transformation solutions in downstream oil and gas, commercial building automation, smart grid, offshore drilling, advanced distributed condition-based monitoring, and protection systems. He was involved in the creation of WIFI, Bluetooth, Zigbee and WirelessHART, among other innovations. He recently moved to Washington state with his wife and two kids to continue his innovation journey, this time joining Microsoft as part of their Experiences and Devices team. The talk will take place at 3:30pm on Oct. 12 and can be attended in person or virtually. Engineering students, faculty and staff may attend in person in MEB 238. A live stream of the event via Zoom is also open to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public by registration (click the "sign up" button above). |
