Description | The annual Leadership Seminar Series demonstrates the breadth of career opportunities available to mechanical engineering graduates. The speakers are graduates of the UW ME department, and the seminar series provides opportunities for ME students and alumni to connect. About the seminar: Dennis Heaney began his career at Boeing as a mechanical engineer working on electronic engine controls on Pratt and Whitney turbofan engines. Dennis joined the Army at the beginning of Operation Desert Shield and served in both the Infantry and for the majority of his career, in Special Forces. While Dennis did not directly apply his degree in mechanical engineering to his military service, his education and background provided a foundation of disciplined problem solving employed throughout his thirty-year military career. In the latter years of his service, he has seen the application of data collection and analysis, cyber operations and information operations applied to special operations to equip operators planning for possible future conflict with both terrorist organizations and global nation-state adversaries. About the speaker:Dennis is a former United States Army Special Forces officer who joined the Army in 1991 and retired from active duty in 2021. Dennis graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and hired on at the Boeing Commercial Aircraft Company straight out of the UW. After spending over three years as a mechanical engineer in the BCAC Propulsion Division, he became an Infantry officer and transitioned to the Special Forces after seven years in service. Dennis has deployed on combat operations to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mindanao in the southern Philippines, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Jordan. He has advised allied partner militaries in Thailand, Japan, South Korea, India, Bangladesh, Taiwan, and Australia. He currently works for Valiant Integrated Services as a military technical adviser and enjoys riding his road bike and paddleboarding when the weather permits. Dennis currently resides in Fircrest, Washington with his wife Marie and they have three grown children Thomas, Joseph, and Carolyn. |
