Following on our spring Town Hall, PoE will be sponsoring a series of conversations among students, staff and faculty throughout fall quarter. These interactive, on-line events will bring together (on Friday afternoons through the fall) campus leaders and change-makers to lead discussion on the topic of: "On Race: Talking, Listening, Making Change". Please join us Friday October 23rd starting at 3pm for what will be one of the most intriguing of our fall quarter Open Spaces conversations. Two campus leaders who were very involved in the long effort to create a Diversity course requirement at UW will be reflecting on what it took to make this happen and how they assess the results. For those of you interested in a possible Sustainability course requirement, there is much to be learned. For all of you interested in policy and/or legal issues, this makes a fascinating case study of social and institutional change—how it happens, but also why it can be so hard and take so long. I’m excited about having Shawn Wong (http://shawnwongwrites.com/about/ ) and Terryl Ross (https://environment.uw.edu/about/diversity-equity-inclusion/ ) together to discuss diversity past, present and future.
