Description | Register for Zoom link Alison Beason is a Policy Analyst for the Port of Seattle. Prior to her service she worked at the City of Tacoma. During her tenure, she oversaw the immigrant and refugee portfolio, resulting in the creation of the City’s first Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs. In addition to forming the Commission, she developed Tacoma’s Equity Index. The Index evaluates the city by census block groups and looks at obstacles and barriers, which prevent the success of residents. Her overreaching goal is to help The City develop data-driven decision-making practices to eliminate the equitable disparities within the city. Her work has been featured within Next City, GAREand recently presented at the 2020 ESRI User Conference and National League of Cities. She previously worked at the United State Offices of Management and Budget, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She worked on science policy, retention and recruitment of underrepresented minority scientists in STEM, strategic planning on science policy, and budget recommendations. Her passion for diversity and equity started in her early career working for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in the Department of Education and Human Resources. Her AAAS internship in Washington, D.C., and overall life experiences helped shape her understanding of representation in the Sciences. The Environmental and Occupational Health Seminar (Env H 580) is a department-sponsored seminar series for students, staff and faculty; practicing professionals in the environmental and occupational health fields; and the public. This seminar highlights the rich diversity of our department and is an opportunity to hear from locally, nationally and internationally known scientists, practitioners and policymakers on issues of current scientific importance. |
