Bertil Hille, Ph.D. Wayne E. Crill Endowed Professorship, Physiology and Biophysics Distinguished Scientist Lecture: "G-Protein coupled receptors and membrane phosphoinositide dynamics modulate neuronal excitability" Inaugurated in 1993, the Distinguished Scientist Lecture recognizes an accomplished UW senior scientist for outstanding achievements in their field of research. Bertil Hille is an Awardee of the Albert Lasker Foundation and of the Canada Gairdner Foundation. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the National Academy of Medicine. He has been a faculty member at the UW SOM for 50 years. For the first several decades, he helped to establish the field of ion channels. This lecture reflects subsequent more cell biological work, emphasizing the universal signaling roles of phosphoinositide phospholipids in cell membranes and their dynamic changes through receptors and metabolism. By regulating ion channels, these signaling phospholipids coordinate and shape neuronal excitability.
