UW Global "Community Conversations"

On the first Tuesday of each month of the academic year, UW Global hosts a gathering for faculty who are engaged or interested in global work: Community Conversations.

This is not a lecture series. It is a welcoming and conversational space to meet colleagues, share food and drink, and connect around the many ways global perspectives show up in our teaching, research, and engagement. Whether your work involves international research, global learning, study abroad, visiting scholars, or exploring global issues locally, this is a place to get to know one another, exchange ideas, and build community.

Each month, we’ll feature a brief, informal spotlight such as a faculty project, a new global initiative, or an international guest on campus to spark conversation. The heart of the gathering, however, is the conversation itself: time to talk, listen, make connections, and learn what others across campus are doing. It is held from 3-5pm on the Seattle Campus at the UW Club.

Light food/snacks and beverages will be provided. RSVPs are appreciated to help us plan, but faculty are always welcome to stop by even if they decide at the last minute.

We hope this becomes a familiar rhythm on campus — come when you can, bring a colleague, and help build the vibrant community of globally engaged faculty at UW.

2026 Ellison Lecture | Togzhan Kassenova | Nuclear Futures in Central Asia: Opportunities and Risks

Thursday, Oct 22, 2026, 5:30 – 7 p.m. PDT

Central Asia stands at a crossroads where the promise of nuclear energy collides with the weight of its history and geopolitics. This talk will examine how the region’s pursuit of nuclear power can drive clean growth, enhance energy independence, and advance decarbonization goals in a rapidly warming world while also confronting significant challenges, including construction delays, nuclear safety and security risks, waste management, corruption, and geopolitical pressures.

Dr. Togzhan Kassenova is a senior fellow at the Project on International Security, Commerce, and Economic Statecraft (PISCES) at the Center for Policy Research, University at Albany, and a visiting professor at the Institute of International Relations (IRI), University of São Paulo. She is an expert on nuclear politics, WMD nonproliferation, strategic trade controls, and financial crime prevention. She currently works on issues related to proliferation financing controls, exploring ways to minimize proliferators' access to the global financial system. Kassenova holds a Ph.D. in Politics from the University of Leeds. From 2011 to 2015, Kassenova served on the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters. She is a member of the UN Independent Scientific Panel on the Effects of Nuclear War.

Kassenova is the author of the award-winning Atomic Steppe: How Kazakhstan Gave Up the Bomb (Stanford University Press, 2022).
