\nJoin VNC for a Green Crab Molt training workshop and learn more about t
he invasive european green crab(EGC)! Participants will gather at KVI to
learn identification techniques\, and how to document/report any found
EGC’s to WSU in order to monitor and prevent their spread. \n\nThe Europ
ean green crab is considered one of the world’s worst invasive species a
ccording to WDFW. Native to the has made its way over to the west coast
and up our northern shorelines and into the Salish Sea. This workshop i
s focused on helping the community identify and document their spread. A
s of now\, the European green crab has not been documented in the southe
rn sound\, but we want to make sure that our community is keeping an eye
out while preventing their spread by notifying WSU\, allowing us to tak
e action against this prolific species.

Pierce County Molt Search Practice Event with Harbor WildWatch\nHarbor
WildWatch invites the public to assist in WSU Extension and Washington S
ea Grant’s “Molt Search” program\, a participatory science initiative to
combat the growing concerns about the invasive European green crab. The
European green crab is considered to be one of the world’s worst invasi
ve species and it threatens the overall health of Washington’s marine wa
ters. Only a small fraction of the suitable nearshore habitat for this a
nimal can be monitored by Washington Sea Grant’s Crab Team and the WDFW-
led coalition of tribal co-managers and partners. The Molt Search progra
m enables the public to help protect local marine waters by monitoring s
horelines throughout the Salish Sea. Interested community members are in
vited to learn how to conduct a timed survey for crab molts and to repor
t their findings using a mobile app. To be extra prepared\, download the
“MyCoast” app ahead of time!\n\nThe Molt Search program enables the pub
lic to help protect local marine waters by monitoring shorelines through
out the Salish Sea by teaching volunteers simple\, standardized steps fo
r searching and reporting on the presence and absence of European green
crab molts (the empty shell that gets left behind as a crab grows larger
). Molts can serve as an early indicator of the presence of European gre
en crab in a new area and the more eyes on the beach\, the better. In ad
dition to better understanding European green crabs\, this training also
is an opportunity to fill in data gaps about the iconic Dungeness crab.
We hope that YOU can be part of the early detection team!\n\nJune 23rd
at Jack Hyde Park near the sundial statue. Parking is available at Chine
se Reconciliation Park and along the railroad tracks across the street f
rom the park. Use the cross walk or walk down through the parking lot to
access the sidewalk that leads up to the sundial statue.\n\nMolt Search

areas of green crabspread? What patterns can we uncover in where juveni
le Dungeness crabs are living and growing? To contribute to this effort
\, Molt Search on as many local shorelines as you’re able to reach on Jun
e 26th. Remember to crush your collection after submitting it to avoid a
ny doublecounts by Searchers coming behind you.\n\nAlready trained? Stop
by any local shoreline on June 26th to complete a Molt Search independe
ntly\, contributing to Washington’s largest single-day dataset on molt d
istribution across the Salish Sea. Or you’re welcome at any of the locat
ions below to get your questions answered by trainers and meet fellow Mo
lt Searchers.\n\nNeed to get trained or want to participate with others?
Trainings are offered throughout the month of June\, including a Virtua
 l Training on Zoom (Weds. 6/24\, noon-1:30pm): \nhttps://wsu.zoom.us/mee
 ting/register/gLc-h5cFQVW51VeHvncoUQ#/registration. Shorelines across th
e region will be activated by local partners on June 26th. Stop by one n
ear you to get trained or mingle with other Molt Searchers. Bring a frie
nd!\n\nMolt Search trainers will be on-site 6/26 at several locations to
answer all your green crab questions & walk you through Molt Search pro
tocols. Find an event near you on the Molt Search Event Map (linked here

---------------\nMolt Search is a program by Washington Sea Grant\, with
partnership from Washington State University Extension and many local p
artner organizations. By participating you can help monitor shorelines a
cross Washington for invasive European green crabs and native Dungeness
crabs by following a simple protocol: a timed collection of all molts on
the shore\, submitted via MyCoast: http://mycoast.org/wa/crab. Find out

k for the annual Green Crab Molt Blitz at Saltwater State Park! \n\nThe
Green Crab Molt Blitz is a Salish Sea-wide event organized by Washington
Sea Grant. It is a free\, hands-on citizen science training focused on
monitoring the spread of invasive European green crabs in Puget Sound. E
uropean green crabs are one of the world’s most invasive marine species
and pose a serious threat to Washington’s eelgrass habitat and native an
imals\, including salmon and Dungeness crab. This training is open to an
yone interested in marine conservation who wants to learn how to identif
y European green crab molts and help assist with shoreline monitoring ef
forts - no experience is necessary! \n\nWe will spend about an hour in t
he classroom\, and the rest of the time we will practice conducting molt
surveys on the beach. These molt searches are vital to supporting early
detection and protection of the local marine environment\, and they rel
y on community members like you. Please dress appropriately for outdoor
beach conditions and weather. More details and directions will be provid
ed upon registration.\n\nFor questions or to RSVP\, contact outreach@fri

\nJoin ESC for the annual Green Crab Molt Blitz at Seahurst Park! The Gre
en Crab Molt Blitz is a Salish Sea wide event organized by Washington Se
a Grant. ESC will be there to provide training and green crab molt searc
h protocol - so no experience necessary! But we encourage you to attend
a training beforehand (like the virtual training hosted 12-1:30 on Wedne
sday 6/24).\n\nInvasive Green Crabs pose a threat to our native crab pop
ulations\, soft shell clams\, and eelgrass beds - which is essential hab
itat for our salmon! Green Crabs have been spotted as south as Whidbey I
sland\, and this will be the first large-scale monitoring effort at this
location to collect baseline data.\n\nBy collecting this essential moni

-06-26\n\nWe will be putting our Molt Search Training to the test on Jun
e 26th\, 12pm at the Mouth of Gig Harbor Old Ferry Landing. This is a gr
eat opportunity to do a survey with a biologist who is ready to answer a
ll of your Molt Search and Crab ID questions.\n\nHarbor WildWatch invite
s the public to assist in WSU Extension and Washington Sea Grant’s “Molt
Search” program\, a participatory science initiative to combat the grow
ing concerns about the invasive European green crab. The European green
crab is considered to be one of the world’s worst invasive species and i
t threatens the overall health of Washington’s marine waters. Only a sma
ll fraction of the suitable nearshore habitat for this animal can be mon
itored by Washington Sea Grant’s Crab Team and the WDFW-led coalition of
tribal co-managers and partners.\n\nThe Molt Search program enables the
public to help protect local marine waters by monitoring shorelines thr
oughout the Salish Sea by teaching volunteers simple\, standardized step
s for searching and reporting on the presence and absence of European gr
een crab molts (the empty shell that gets left behind as a crab grows la
rger). Molts can serve as an early indicator of the presence of European
green crab in a new area and the more eyes on the beach\, the better. I
n addition to better understanding European green crabs\, this training
also is an opportunity to fill in data gaps about the iconic Dungeness c
rab. We hope that YOU can be part of the early detection team!\n\nMolt S
