Join VNC for a Green Crab Molt training workshop and learn more about the invasive european green crab(EGC)! Participants will gather at KVI to learn identification techniques, and how to document/report any found EGC’s to WSU in order to monitor and prevent their spread.

The European green crab is considered one of the world’s worst invasive species according to WDFW. Native to the has made its way over to the west coast and up our northern shorelines and into the Salish Sea. This workshop is focused on helping the community identify and document their spread. As of now, the European green crab has not been documented in the southern sound, but we want to make sure that our community is keeping an eye out while preventing their spread by notifying WSU, allowing us to take action against this prolific species.

Join the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group for a hands-on citizen science training focused on invasive European green crab monitoring in Hood Canal and all of Puget Sound!

European green crabs are one of the world’s most invasive marine species and pose a serious threat to Washington’s shellfish beds, eelgrass habitat, and native ecosystems. Through this training, community members will learn how to identify European green crab molts and assist with shoreline monitoring efforts that support early detection and protection of local marine habitats.

The emerging invasion by European green crab (Carcinus maenas) threatens shellfish and juvenile Dungeness crab, eelgrass beds which provide critical habitat for juvenile salmon, the food supply for shorebirds, and the overall health of Washington’s marine waters.

Washington State University Extension and Washington Sea Grant have teamed up to launch a growing volunteer-based early detection program called Molt Search. Trained community members contribute to early detection of invasive European green crab while also tracking native Dungeness crab across Washington’s shorelines.

Harbor WildWatch invites the public to assist in WSU Extension and Washington Sea Grant’s “Molt Search” program, a participatory science initiative to combat the growing concerns about the invasive European green crab. The European green crab is considered to be one of the world’s worst invasive species and it threatens the overall health of Washington’s marine waters. Only a small fraction of the suitable nearshore habitat for this animal can be monitored by Washington Sea Grant’s Crab Team and the WDFW-led coalition of tribal co-managers and partners. The Molt Search program enables the public to help protect local marine waters by monitoring shorelines throughout the Salish Sea. Interested community members are invited to learn how to conduct a timed survey for crab molts and to report their findings using a mobile app. To be extra prepared, download the “MyCoast” app ahead of time!

The Molt Search program enables the public to help protect local marine waters by monitoring shorelines throughout the Salish Sea by teaching volunteers simple, standardized steps for searching and reporting on the presence and absence of European green crab molts (the empty shell that gets left behind as a crab grows larger). Molts can serve as an early indicator of the presence of European green crab in a new area and the more eyes on the beach, the better. In addition to better understanding European green crabs, this training also is an opportunity to fill in data gaps about the iconic Dungeness crab. We hope that YOU can be part of the early detection team!

June 23rd at Jack Hyde Park near the sundial statue. Parking is available at Chinese Reconciliation Park and along the railroad tracks across the street from the park. Use the cross walk or walk down through the parking lot to access the sidewalk that leads up to the sundial statue.

Salish Sea-wide Molt Blitz!

Friday June 26 - any shore - any time - the most Molt Searches possible!

What’s a Molt Blitz? The goal is to create the largest single-day dataset on molts across inland Washington. Can we find new areas of green crabspread? What patterns can we uncover in where juvenile Dungeness crabs are living and growing? To contribute to this effort, Molt Search on as many local shorelines as you’re able to reach on June 26th. Remember to crush your collection after submitting it to avoid any doublecounts by Searchers coming behind you.

Already trained? Stop by any local shoreline on June 26th to complete a Molt Search independently, contributing to Washington’s largest single-day dataset on molt distribution across the Salish Sea. Or you’re welcome at any of the locations below to get your questions answered by trainers and meet fellow Molt Searchers.

Need to get trained or want to participate with others? Trainings are offered throughout the month of June, including a Virtual Training on Zoom (Weds. 6/24, noon-1:30pm). Shorelines across the region will be activated by local partners on June 26th. Stop by one near you to get trained or mingle with other Molt Searchers. Bring a friend!

About the event
Join ESC for the annual Green Crab Molt Blitz at Seahurst Park! The Green Crab Molt Blitz is a Salish Sea wide event organized by Washington Sea Grant. ESC will be there to provide training and green crab molt search protocol – so no experience necessary! But we encourage you to attend a training beforehand (like the virtual training hosted 12-1:30 on Wednesday 6/24).

Invasive Green Crabs pose a threat to our native crab populations, soft shell clams, and eelgrass beds – which is essential habitat for our salmon! Green Crabs have been spotted as south as Whidbey Island, and this will be the first large-scale monitoring effort at this location to collect baseline data.

By collecting this essential monitoring data, you are helping prevent the spread of Green Crabs in Salish Sea!

Molt Search Training: Seabeck

Join Great Peninsula Conservancy for a shoreline molt survey at Misery Point on the Kitsap Peninsula. As a small group, you’ll walk the intertidal zone searching for shed crab shells and collecting any molts found. As a large group, we will sort and report our findings in the MyCoast app for real research data.

Anyone can participate and learn how to successfully run your own independent molt search. Please note that terrain will likely be uneven and tasks may include bending and grabbing.

European green crab are an aggressive invasive species threatening Puget Sound’s native crabs, eelgrass, and shellfish. Early detection is one of our best tools and every molt volunteers find and report adds to a real dataset used by scientists and resource managers. Wrap up the morning by staying for a bring-your-own picnic on the beach.
