researchers often seek unbiased estimators of causal effects. Yet unbia
sed estimators are often inadmissible\, in the sense that a biased alter
native will always have lower expected error. This raises a natural prac
tical question: how much is gained by using biased estimators instead? I
n this talk\, I present an algorithm for computing minimax estimators of
average-treatment effects from experimental data and compare their perf
ormance with that of the standard difference-in-means estimator.<br><br>

shapes the effect of economic growth on nations&#8217\; carbon emission

to the federal racial and ethnic classification system in the United St
ates offer a unique opportunity to understand how the general public thi
nks about Asian American identity and how Asian populations should be cl
assified in federal data. The Improving Asian Classification Typologies
(ImpACT) project analyzes public comments submitted in response to two F
ederal Register Notices: (1) the OMB&#39\;s proposed revisions to Statis
 tical Policy Directive 15\, 2023\, and (2) the U.S. Census Bureau&#39\;s
draft race and ethnicity coding guidelines\, 2024.<p>Using a mixed dedu
ctive-inductive coding framework\, six coders working in pairs analyzed
comments to develop key themes. Overall\, we found the boundaries of the
Asian category are contested in the comments\, particularly at the inte
rsections with the Middle Eastern and North African\, White\, and Native
Hawaiian and Pacific Islander categories. The geographic subgroups used
to define Asian communities\, including East Asian\, Southeast Asian\,
and South Asian\, are similarly disputed\, particularly for communities
with identities that traverse regional boundaries. We also found disagre
ement over whether Census&#39\; pre-defined regional categories should b
e retained or eliminated\, with some commenters arguing that standardize
d groupings are essential for longitudinal research and reporting\, whil
e others contending that pre-defined categories introduce misclassificat
ion and can undermine community self-identification. Additional themes e
xamine debates over terminology\, data collection practices\, and how cl
assification decisions shape community visibility and health equity.</p>

th exposure &#8211\; let CACHE help!&#160\;&#160\;<br><br>Heat is one of
the most&#160\;frequently&#160\;examined environmental influences on po
pulation health\, and a wide variety of data sources exist to measure ex
posure. This workshop\, sponsored by the Center on Aging\, Health\, and
Environment&#160\;(CACHE)\, provides an overview of heat measures and ex
amples of two\, including hands-on experience with code available via th
e CACHE website.&#160\;Participants will generate temperature exposure m
easures from publicly available data\, as well as&#160\;wet&#160\;bulb t
emperatures.&#160\;The Universal Thermal Climate Index data will also be
demonstrated and linked to population data.&#160\;<br><br>The workshop&
#8217\;s first exercise uses data from&#160\;two&#160\;different sources
 :&#160\;National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration&#160\;(NOAA)&#16
0\;weather-stations&#160\;and ERA5-Land Reanalysis from the European Uni

 p will review information on&#160\;acquiring&#160\;and&#160\;cleaning&#1
60\;daily&#8239\;temperature&#160\;data for New York City\, as an exampl
 e. Key is that&#160\;air&#160\;temperature&#160\;as well as wet bulb tem
perature&#160\;exposure variables are generated\, and at varying tempora
l resolution. On the CACHE website\, the code is embedded in an&#160\;R

rates&#160\;how to construct severe heat measures using the Universal Th
 ermal Climate Index (UTCI\,&#160\;Copernicus&#160\;ERA5-HEAT).&#160\;It
starts by showing data manipulation from raster (grid data) to a tabular
  dataset that obtains UTCI values for each municipality in Mexico&#160\;
as an example. Then\,&#160\;the data are mapped and analyzed as linked t
o population data. Finally\,&#160\;the&#160\;number of days of severe he
 at (32&#176\;C UTCI and above)&#160\;are&#160\;generated. This&#160\;cod
e\, also available on the&#160\;CACHE website\,&#160\;is part of the dem

is constrained and non-uniform treatment assignment poses inferential ch

may target estimands defined on populations inadvertently depending on
randomization ratios or trial operation format\, thereby undermining int

so consider model-assisted covariate adjustment to fully unlock the effi

 >Abstract:&#160\;</strong>How does the state govern immigrant lives not
only through law\, but through time? This book talk centers &#8220\;ille
gality&#8221\; as a temporal mechanism of U.S. migration governance: by
withholding broad pathways to legal status\, the state sustains prolonge
 d legal uncertainty\, blocked mobility\, and restricted cross-border mov
ement that structure the life course. Drawing on three waves of longitud
inal interviews with long-settled undocumented Mexican immigrants in Chi
cago\, the talk traces how those who migrated as young adults enter midd
le life in a condition of legal and temporal suspension that coincides w
ith peak responsibility for others&#8212\;raising children in the United
States while supporting aging parents from afar. Examining the undocume
nted &#8220\;sandwich generation\,&#8221\; the talk shows how family car
egiving is reorganized through prolonged legal uncertainty: strain conce
ntrates when children are young\, responsibilities shift onto adolescent
s as they age\, and care for parents abroad becomes coordinated long-dis
tance support marked by the emotional costs of absence\, even as immigra
nts&#8217\; own later-life security remains uncertain. By centering time
as a tool of migration governance\, the talk offers a structural accoun
t of how immigration policy produces inequality that outlasts any single
reform or administration\, embedding waiting\, deferral\, and constrain
ed mobility across the arc of adulthood.<br><br><strong>Bio:</strong>&#1

focusing on migration governance and the shaping of immigrants&#8217\; l
ong-term life chances. Her first book\,&#160\;Legal Passing: Navigating
Undocumented Life and Local Immigration Law&#160\;(University of Califor
nia Press 2019)\, compares how restrictive and accommodating local immig
ration contexts reorganize undocumented life and drive strategies of &#8
220\;passing&#8221\; within uneven legal landscapes. Her second book\,&#
160\;Enduring Illegality: Time and the State of Waiting in Undocumented
Middle Life&#160\;(University of California Press 2026)\, shows how the
state uses time as a mechanism of immigration control\, with prolonged l
egal uncertainty shaping the life course into middle age through deferre
d futures and constrained caregiving\, work\, and health trajectories. G

n\, Assistant Professor of College of Liberal Arts\, Temple University<b
 r><br><strong>Abstract:&#160\;</strong>Medical schools have increasingly
incorporated the humanities and social sciences into their teaching\, s
eeking to make future physicians more empathetic and more concerned with
equity. In practice\, however\, these good intentions have not translat
ed into critical consciousness. Humanities and social sciences education
has often not only failed to deliver on its promise but even entrenched
the inequalities that the medical profession set out to address.<br><br
 >Lauren D. Olsen examines how U.S. medical school faculty conceived\, de
signed\, and implemented their vision of education\, tracing the failure
s of curricular reform. She argues that the way medical students encount
er humanities and social sciences material in practice has served to rei
nforce the status quo by teaching them to individualize systemic problem
 s. Students learn to avoid advocacy\, critique\, and attention to struct
ural inequalities&#8212\;while also gathering that it will be up to them
to find coping strategies for problems from burnout to systemic racism.
Olsen pinpoints the limitations of how clinical faculty understand the
humanities and social sciences\, arguing that in structuring and teachin
 g courses\, they assumed\, reinforced\, and glorified a white\, elite mo
del of the medical profession. Showing how deeply intertwined profession
al and social identities are in medical education\, Curricular Injustice
has significant implications for how occupations\, organizations\, and
 institutions shape understandings of inequality.<br><br><strong>Bio:</st
rong>&#160\;Lauren D. Olsen joined the Department of Sociology within th
e College of Liberal Arts at Temple University as a faculty member in 20
 19. Before starting as an Assistant Professor at Temple University\, Dr.
Olsen completed her PhD in Sociology at the University of California Sa
n Diego (UCSD)\, where she also received her Master&#8217\;s degree in t
he same field. Prior to that\, she received her Bachelor&#8217\;s of Art
s degree in Religion from Columbia University. As a sociologist of medic
ine\, Dr. Olsen&#8217\;s award-winning research has been published in fl
agship journals\, like the&#160\;Journal of Health and Social Behavior\,
 &#160\;Social Science and Medicine\, and&#160\;Social Problems&#160\;and
has a new book out with Columbia University Press (2024)\, entitled&#16
0\;Curricular Injustice: How U.S. Medical Schools Reproduce Inequalities
.<br>&#160\;<br>Dr. Olsen&#8217\;s research lies at the intersection of
 the sociology of medicine\, knowledge\, education\, culture\, and social
inequalities.&#160\;Focusing on the case of U.S. medical education\, sh
e studies how educators\, physicians\, and policy makers apply knowledge
to improve patient care and how the context in which these actors work
impacts how they utilize knowledge. Dr. Olsen addresses questions about
how these actors understand the sources of health and healthcare inequal
ities in the U.S. patient population\, how they decide what kinds of kno
wledge are clinically relevant\, and how they reproduce forms of inequal
ity in their educational materials and interactional processes.<br>&#160
\;<br>Building off of the research captured in her book\,&#160\;Curricul
ar Injustice: How U.S. Medical Schools Reproduce Inequalities\, Dr. Olse
n is currently engaged in research on premedical students&#8217\; experi
ences and expectations along their career path with a team of Temple Uni
 versity undergraduates\, medical students&#8217\; and educators&#8217\;
 conceptualizations and engagements with &#8220\;service learning&#8221\;
with physicians and social scientists at Lewis Katz School of Medicine
\, medical students plans to serve primarily underserved populations with
colleague Laura Orrico\, and medical school leaders&#8217\; institution

using social upheaval among northern coastal communities and disrupting
a more southern\, temperate world as sea levels rise. Economic\, academi

potential of ice as they plan for a future shaped by rapid transformati
on. Yet\, in&#160\;Ice Geographies\, Jen Rose Smith demonstrates that ic
e has always been at the center of making sense of the world. Ice as hom
eland is often at the heart of Arctic and sub-Arctic ontologies\, cosmol

s a pristine or empty &#8220\;nature&#8221\; stripped of power relations
. Smith centers ice to study race and indigeneity by investigating ice r
elations as sites and sources of analysis that are bound up with colonia
