Under a parametric model for the local quantile regression function, we develop Lasso estimation for a non-convex and non-smooth objective function to estimate the parameters of interest in the quantile regression function. A new algorithm based on linear programming with linear complementarity constraints is constructed to solve this optimization problem. We propose de-sparsifying estimators for pointwise and uniform inference for the coefficients of the local quantile regression function and the local conditional/heterogeneous quantile treatment effects. Moreover, we obtain uniform strong approximations of the local quantile treatment process by conditionally pivotal and Gaussian processes. Based on these strong approximations, we develop bootstrap resampling methods to construct uniform confidence bands for the local conditional quantile treatment effects given high-dimensional covariates. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method through simulation studies.

To join this event via Zoom, please email your request to the seminar coordinator.

Event interval: Single day event
Campus location: Hans Rosling Center for Population Health (HRC)
Campus room: Room 135, Hans Rosling Center for Population Health
Accessibility Contact: Deb Nelson, nelsod6@uw.edu, 206-685-9323
Event Types: Lectures/Seminars
Event sponsors: UW BiostatisticsSchool of Public Healthhttp://uid.trumba.com/event/172492112BIC's Artificial Intelligence Speaker Series - "A Brief Introduction to (Large) Language Models"Tuesday, Apr. 2, 2024, 3 – 4 p.m.

BIC Quarterly Speaker event

Tues 4/2/24 @3-4 pm, Sofia Serrano in HRC Rm111

A Brief Introduction to (Large) Language Models

In this talk, we'll walk through the core problem of language modeling, which provides the foundation for today's (large) language models. Consequently, EHR data for patients with more healthcare utilization tend to be captured more frequently and provide more detail about the patient’s health. This connection between patterns of healthcare utilization and data quantity and quality, termed informed presence, violates the common assumption of independence between observation and outcome processes. This is particularly problematic for historically marginalized populations and other groups experiencing barriers to healthcare. Limited data availability has the potential to increase bias, imprecision and algorithmic unfairness in EHR-based research results for these medically underserved groups. In this presentation, I will discuss the roots of informed presence bias in EHR data and illustrate examples of informed presence bias using real-world EHR data on childhood mortality and breast cancer outcomes. I will quantify the magnitude of bias resulting from alternative patterns of dependence between outcome and exposure data capture and healthcare utilization intensity and demonstrate several solutions to this problem. While EHR data can be used to accelerate health research, achieving this goal while also safeguarding equity for underserved populations requires careful attention to data provenance and analytic methods.

To join this event via Zoom, please email your request to the vwiranta@fredhutch.org

Event interval: Single day event
Campus room: Fred Hutch Cancer Center, Room M1-A303/305
Accessibility Contact: Deb Nelson, nelsod6@uw.edu, 206-685-9323
Event Types: Lectures/Seminars
Event sponsors: UW BiostatisticsSchool of Public Healthhttp://uid.trumba.com/event/172701096Save the Date! He also holds an appointment in molecular and comparative pathobiology. His areas of clinical expertise include HIV pathogenesis and infectious disease. Dr. Blankson earned his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College and his Ph.D. from Rockefeller University. He completed his residency and a fellowship in infectious disease at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Blankson's laboratory focuses on understanding the mechanisms of control of viral replication in rare HIV-1 infected patients who maintain undetectable viral loads in the absence of antiretroviral therapy. His lab is studying viral and host factors in these patients with the hope of being to apply the principles to a therapeutic vaccine. They have shown that CD8+ T cells are effective at suppressing viral replication in vitro and we are studying the exact mechanisms of control. They are also trying to determine whether natural killer cells play a role in some instances and whether effector cells are capable of controlling viral replication in macrophages as well as in CD4+ T cells.

*At the request of the speaker, this talk will not be recorded nor shared after the seminar

3:30pm - 4:00pm

New Faces Speaker: German Gornalusse, PhD, MS

Title: Can Host Transcriptomics Predict the Size and Activity of the HIV Reservoir?

Germán Gornalusse is Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Adjunct Faculty in the PhD program in Pathobiology at the UW and Affiliated Scientist in the Vaccine Infectious Disease Division (VIDD) at the Hutch. Three essential periods at JHU led to the ultimate change of my career pathway. With that, I will examine the challenges being faced for such a switch and how to cope with them. This will be followed by the sharing of some of my initiatives carried out at National Yang-Ming University and National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan. Perhaps to no one’s surprise, when looking back, there are close connections between the two careers I have engaged in the past forty some years.

Event interval: Single day event
Campus location: William H. I will review the rationale and development of the original test-negative design and discuss extensions to cover randomized exposures, various kinds of clustering and mixed testing programs, with illustrations from both dengue fever and Ebola virus disease. Recent interest has focused on uses of the test-negative design to estimate and compare effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines. The presentation will highlight statistical issues associated with the design, analysis, and interpretation of resulting data, with suggestions for further research. The lecture will touch on statistical issues associated with causal inference, cluster randomised trials, retrospective studies, spatial statistics, and randomisation inference.

To join this event via Zoom, please email your request to the seminar coordinator.

Event interval: Single day event
Campus location: Hans Rosling Center for Population Health (HRC)
Campus room: Room 135, Hans Rosling Center for Population Health
Accessibility Contact: Deb Nelson, nelsod6@uw.edu, 206-685-9323
Event Types: Lectures/Seminars
Event sponsors: UW BiostatisticsSchool of Public Healthhttp://uid.trumba.com/event/171867391CFAS Seminar April 2024: Chlamydia with Dr. Christine Khosropour & Robert Suchlandon Zoom
Thursday, Apr. 18, 2024, 4 – 5 p.m.

We welcome your attendance at the April 2024 UW Center for AIDS & STD (CFAS) Research Seminar.

Please join us on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 4 pm PST on Zoom.
For Zoom info: Please email CFAS@uw.edu or click here to be added to the mailing list.

"Chlamydia"
Christine Khosropour, MPH, PhD & Robert Suchland
University of Washington

Event interval: Single day event
Accessibility Contact: cfas@uw.edu
Event Types: Lectures/Seminars
More info: depts.washington.edu…School of Public Healthhttps://depts.washington.edu/cfas/events/center-for-aids-and-std-seminar-series/http://uid.trumba.com/event/173393650School of Public Health Virtual Career Fair on HandshakeTuesday, Apr. 23, 2024, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

(RegistrationRequired) Priority registration for SPH students opens on April 15th.

OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS! However, single-cell data present unique challenges that have required the development of specialized methods and software infrastructure to successfully derive biological insights. Compared to bulk RNA-seq, there is an increased scale of the number of observations (or cells) that are measured and there is increased sparsity of the data, or fraction of observed zeros. Furthermore, as single-cell technologies mature, the increasing complexity and volume of data require fundamental changes in data access, management, and infrastructure alongside specialized methods to facilitate scalable analyses. I will discuss some challenges in the analysis of scRNA-seq and spatially-resolved transcriptomics data and present some solutions that we have made towards addressing these challenges.

To join this event via Zoom, please email your request to the seminar coordinator.

Event interval: Single day event
Campus location: Hans Rosling Center for Population Health (HRC)
Campus room: Room 135, Hans Rosling Center for Population Health
Accessibility Contact: Deb Nelson, nelsod6@uw.edu, 206-685-9323
Event Types: Lectures/Seminars
Event sponsors: UW BiostatisticsSchool of Public Healthhttp://uid.trumba.com/event/170510252Pathobiology PhD Student Research Symposiummaps.app.goo.gl…
Friday, Apr. 26, 2024, 12 – 5:30 p.m.

Pathobiology PhD Student Research Symposium – Spring Quarter 2024

University of Washington, South Lake Union
Orin Smith Auditorium – Building C
750 Republican St
Seattle, WA 98109

*Schedule not yet available*

Event interval: Single day event
Campus room: Orin Smith Auditorium, UW South Lake Union (Bldg C)
Accessibility Contact: The University of Washington is committed to providing access, equal opportunity and reasonable accommodation in its services, programs, activities, education and employment for individuals with disabilities.
