About Richard Sezibera: Dr. Richard Sezibera is Rwanda’s former Minister of Health and a current member of the Rwandan Senate. He serves as an independent board member of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Previously, Dr. Sezibera was the Secretary-General of the East African Community, the regional intergovernmental organization of the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, the Republic of Rwanda and the Republic of Burundi. He was Rwanda’s Minister of Health from October 2008 to April 2011, during which he led Rwanda’s international-recognized advances in the health sector. Prior to this, he served in many capacities in the Rwandan government, including Ambassador to the United States of America, Presidential Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region, and Senior Adviser to the President of Rwanda, where he worked on peace and security, conflict management and resolution, and regional integration issues. In addition to his current role with Gavi, he also formerly served as a Gavi Board member representing governments of developing countries. Dr. Sezibera is a medical doctor by profession. About Elizabeth Bukusi: Dr. Elizabeth Anne Bukusi, MBChB, M.Med (ObGyn), MPH, PhD, PGD (Research Ethics), MBE (Masters in Bioethics), CIP, FAAS, earned her general medical degree and Masters in Obstetrics and Gynecology degree from the University of Nairobi. She then earned an MPH and PhD from the University of Washington’s Department of Epidemiology, and a post-graduate diploma in Research Bioethics from the Centre for Bioethics and Culture and the Sind Institute of Urology and Transplantation in Karachi and is a certified IRB professional. She is a Chief Research Officer and is currently the Deputy Director Research and Training at KEMRI from 2011 to 2016. Her primary areas of interest in research focus on sexually transmitted infections, reproductive health, and HIV prevention, care and treatment. In addition to substantial experience in conducting research in Kenya as well as providing HIV care, mentoring and training different cadres of health care and research personnel, she has an interest in ethics and the development of systems and structures for regulation of research. |
