Collective Music, Community-building, and Autonomous Organizing in Veracruz, Mexico April 3rd 12:30- 3 PM Unity Room/ ECC Lunch will be provided This event will feature a panel discussion and a series of workshops with Colectivo Altepee, a collective of musicians from Veracruz, Mexico that organizes community responses to ecological destruction. One of the most important things to highlight about Colectivo Altepee is that their organizing is grassroots and autonomous, completely community based. Using music as both a survival method and a community-building method, Colectivo Altepee centers their work on community support and ways to bring awareness, organizing, and information to organize against the abuses of the government and transnational corporations. Colectivo Altepee doesn't only organize against the corporate interests that ravages their lands, they also build community in order to provide the resources that the state denies their communities for autonomous self-management. The Graduate Research Cluster for the Comparative Study of Race will host this collective of musicians to participate on a panel discussion and in a series of workshops. The aim is to learn and implement transnational and translocal responses by sharing the methods used by Colectivo Altepee in order for Seattle communities, graduate and undergraduate students in particular, to work, think, and organize collectively.
