Description | Although Latin American and U.S. Latino/a Christianities have emerged out of tragic histories of conquest and colonialism, they have nevertheless given rise to profoundly hopeful and liberating expressions of spirituality. This talk explores the significance of Latin American Christian spirituality for our world today. Christopher D. Tirres is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at DePaul University in Chicago, IL. Tirres has a longstanding interest in three quintessential American traditions: Latin American liberation theology, U.S. Latino/a theology, and U.S. pragmatism. He explores their intersection in his first book, The Aesthetics and Ethics of Faith: A Dialogue between Liberationist and Pragmatic Thought (Oxford University Press, 2014). He is currently at work on his second book, tentatively entitled "Liberating Spiritualities Across the Latinx Americas: Spiritual-Philosophical Profiles." Tirres is a member of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy (SAAP), the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the U.S. (ACHTUS), and the American Academy of Religion (AAR), in which he serves as co-chair of the Religions in the Latina/o Americas Unit. He is also a volunteer with the Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants (ICDI).
