Please join us for a discussion of Shahab Ahmed’s groundbreaking book, What is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic. This work offers a new conceptual framework for understanding Islam and the lived experience of Muslims, while critiquing the ways in which Islam has often been studied in the past. The discussion will be led by a mix of scholars, Purnima Dhavan (History), Hamza Zafer (NELC), Joel Walker (History), and Shariq Khan (JSIS). Discussion leaders will address both the contributions this book has made as well as discuss the critiques of this book since its publication in 2016. We invite all who are interested to join; you need not have read the book to participate. Substantial time will be devoted to taking questions and comments from the audience. Light refreshments will be served |
