University Beyond Bars and FITE would like to invite you to a special film screening and panel discussion to highlight the transformative power of education in prison. FITE-Formerly Incarcerated to Education, is a grassroots organization of students and film makers who documented the journey of four formerly incarcerated individuals to higher education at UC Berkeley. UBB's mission is rooted in the belief that everyone has a right to education, regardless of background, socioeconomic status, or circumstance. Our work aims to promote a just society by making education accessible for some of Washington State's most overlooked and marginalized populations. UBB imagines a society where all people are given the chance to transform themselves, their families, and their communities through education. Panelists include: Lisa Lalonde, Graduate student in humanities at UB and a UBB instructor Derek Boyd, UBB Alum and current student at Seattle Central College Jennifer Williams, Senior at UW Law, Societies & Justice Department There will be a reception beforehand at 4:30 pm in the Simpson Center for the Humanities (Communication Building #206). Light refreshments will be provided. |
