As the environmental sciences are forced to confront the dissolution of boundaries between natural and built environments, we are forced to reevaluate the organizing concepts of those sciences. Carlos Santana critically examines how concepts such as biodiversity, invasive species, and ecosystem are adapting to the needs of applied environmental sciences like conservation biology and urban ecology.

Carlos Gray Santana is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Utah. He works primarily in the ethics, history, and philosophy of the environmental sciences, with a focus on issues raised by anthropogenic change. He also thinks about how to do effective interdisciplinary research in a complex world, which he tackles both conceptually and using digital techniques.
